Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

bad saddle sores

Trying to figure what exactly caused my saddle sore problem?

I rode the RI MS 150 this weekend on my well fitted Tarmac Pro SL with a 143 mm fitted Toupe and have bad sores on both sit bones. I`m 6 foot 3 185lbs and am very comfortable on the bike and to date have not had this issue before. I have plenty of miles on the bike- over 2k and strength wise felt good during the 2 day event. My longest ride before this event was only 42 miles- not enough prep?

My average for the was 18mph, not fast but decent for a charity ride. I wonder if the slower pace changed my bike position or if I used too much bag balm once discomfort set in? It literally felt like I was sitting on knives at about mile 60 day one and never got better.

If i suck it up and continue to ride will these cursed sores ever heal or am I off the bike a while?

I have never found the saddle to very comfortable but do like the lack of numbness.

Thanks

Is it just a soreness (sensitive to pressure etc.) or an actual sore (visible to the eye)?

actual sore on the left side and smaller blister like one on the right, I can also see a seat shaped wound below the sore on both sides. I wear Voler Avanti pro bibs and to date loved them.

I really wonder if I over used the bag balm and softened up the tissue?

In my opinion, the flesh just needs some toughening up, and the MS 150 put a lot more wear and tear on your backside than your customary mileage.

This is pretty common when someone takes a mileage leap like you did. It should heal pretty quick.

you might want to try a different seat.

No change in detergent and I have been riding this saddle since November. Like I said its very comfortable but I have no numbness issues so I put up with it. It seems like a new saddle is like opening Pandora`s box.

I had a sore for the first year I rode, but eventually it went away.
Make sure its not an ingrown hair.

saddle sores

These must be dealt with immediately after the ride. After showering apply Neosporin cream and then again the next day along with your choice of chamois butter (or the like) before the ride.

You might find that this is the problem. I had a saddle, Sella Italia, that had on embroidery logo just where, coincidently, I was having saddle sore problems. Got rid of that saddle and the problems went away.

Good luck

shave all the hair off your ass.
make sure your chamois isn't made of a material that absorbs and traps sweat.

I"m a little shorter and lighter than you, but also use a 143 mm saddle. The pads of some bib shorts are too small for me, and resulted in me sitting on the edge of the pad stitching...it resulted in cutting my tush. I think you need to check your seat height and position, perhaps it is too high resulting in rocking motion on the saddle, and try different shorts...perhaps the seam in the pad is in the wrong place for you...

there are lots of reasons that people get saddle sores, but i agree with the person that said it was probably because of the jump in mileage that you did. i would say that it's ok to keep riding, but just stick to 25-35 mile rides until it heals completely. and if you get any pain during those short rides than stop riding until it heals...

and i've heard that Aquaphor skin cream actually works great on saddle sores. i can't say that i've tried it, because i haven't had a saddle sore in a while, but maybe you should think about giving it a try...

I am going to slightly lower the saddle, check the bibs and take a few more days off the bike- really painful right now.

thanks all.

+1 on shaving the hair---also get some "butt paste" from your local phamacy. It should help clear up the sores alot faster.

do you use chamois cream, by the truckload ? if you don't, then your bad technique is the lack of using it

in the meantime, while the taint is on fire, use a fat gob of neosporin instead of chamois cream daily until
it heals. then switch to dznuts or assos.

I don't use Chamois cream and I'm not having any problems.

Probably the longer rides as mentioned above. Did it rain? That affects friction and washes away water soluble chamois butter. Don't really agree with the shaving as hair on hair naturally reduces friction.

Obviously keep the area clean, and take a ten minute bath each day for the next few days, and I bet you'll be ready to immediately hop back on the saddle.
