Wheel Theft?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wheel Theft?

I was watching some Youtube videos, this particular video shows a crash in a women's race in Harlem. There is a crash and at approx. 36 seconds into the video a fan reaches over the fence and grabs a wheel .. WTF!! Am I blind or do i really see this.

In order for the the supposed theft to have happened, a front wheel would have had to complete disengage from the fork (which would include having the skewer completely unwound), the tire and tube to come completely off (as I didn't see either on the wheel) and then bounce to the spectator.

I think you need one of these:

I keep playing it over and over to see what happened and it appears one of the ladies just decided to faint in the middle of the peloton and veered left, for apparently no reason. Odd.

looks like to me the guy taking the wheel was ahead of the wreck and he may have had it and was just getting out of the way if carnage got to him, like he had it and was just resting it along the barrier.

I dont know but it was weird looking

It was already in his hand. He was pretty far from the wreck too, no way that wheel came from the wreck.

That was a weird looking crash though. The lady just all of a sudden swerved and plowed everyone on her left.

There's no theft there, the person already had the wheel, and if you look closely you can see they the person with the wheel is much closer to the camera(at least 20-30 feet), so they were in no position to steal anything even if they could.

The guy stole it while she was riding. That is why she crashed.

did any one else cringe by the female announcer's commentary about how, from her experience, crashes sometimes happen in the straights?

These both look like the kind of crash that comes from a crossed wheel...

The wheel is crossed, and the rider's weight is increasingly overbalanced against the resistance... then the wheel pops free and with the sudden release of resistance, the rider shoots across in that direction.
