Are Lemond frame panels paint or decal?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Are Lemond frame panels paint or decal?

Ok, odd question I've been wondering and its actually difficult to tell.

Are the name panels on Lemond frames paint or decals? The striped ends are clearly decals as there is a seam underneath. However the panels don't have a visible seam indicating paint. On the down tube, you can see through the color at the carbon weave, suggesting some sort of decal but of course could be thin coat of paint.

Just interested as I was thinking some year to replace mine with custom colored ones - identical look but my own specified color panels. But I'm not going into 55/Rad full custom paint territory.

They are paint - at least the ones I've stripped off several higher level Lemonds came off like paint. And if I were going to replicate them, I'd go with paint if I were painting the frame anyway.

If you need a source for Lemond decals - the older block style - I can help you there.

Depends what frame type. The old Lemond Titanium frames had stickers. My 2008 Lemond Carbon has a layer of epoxy over the decals, so I can't tell if they are painted or stickers, but well protected regardless.

I have seen classic Lemond sticker/frame decal sets on Ebay for about $10.

I have an '08 Sarthe and the panels are definitely decals. I'm pretty sure there's also a clear coat over them, or at least it feels that way.

It does seem like a clearcoat over the seat tube panel, which is over clearcoated carbon, but the titanium downtube isn't painted over. I actually have a small scratch in the downtube panel, and it feels like a decal but looks like paint - prompting my curiosity.

I'm not talking Triomphe frames, just the classic 2003-2008 color panels with the script lettering. Pre-2003 was the capital block lettering. I would do the same thing except replace my silver panels with black lettering likely to red panels and white lettering. Given you have the same ti/carbon spine frame Rad I'll go with your answer of paint. I could have my wife's graphics department make up new decals for it.

. You mentioned that you had a source for the old block letter style stickers. Any chance that source is still viable?
Any info appreciated.
Thanks - Chris

I don't know how often 55/Rad swings by BikeForums these days. But I've always found him very happy to help a fellow cyclist. I'll shot him an e-mail with a link to your post.

I swing by when I'm hailed...

The block letter graphics are definitely decals and they come in 3 parts. First is the background color panel, which goes all the way around the tube. Second is the block lettering "LeMond" and third is the world champion rainbow stripes that go around each end of the background panel.

In the past, I've printed the background separate from the lettering and sourced the stripes from existing places. Once placed on the frame, they get clearcoated over to protect them.

I would need to dig through the files to see if I still have the lettering file, which you could take to any printer. Or I could call my printer and see if they have it - which they probably do.

Bottom line - it's not as easy as ordering one decal but it isn't hard. And certainly a lot cheaper.

Resurrection.

Well for the script decals, I ordered the ones off Ebay that I think came from France. For the price it was just the easiest way, and they were very, very nice. Panels were painted and required stripping, which were then repainted, decals applies, an clearcoated. What I haven't found is a good replacement for the stripped decals that cover the transition - in my case paint to Ti on downtube and paint to clearcoat carbon on seat tube. I made my own by printing them on special bumper sticker "paper", but they aren't as durable as stock.

I continue to have a small LeMond problem, now owning 4 of them. It was 5 but I sold one to a neighbor so I could at least keep tabs on it.

I've got a 2001 Ti Frame and the stickers are looking a little rough (so is the headbadge if anyone has any sources) I think right now it appears that I'm riding a "Le Ond" I Found the script style stickers that teterider mentioned but I'd rather go with the original block lettering.

55/Rad - Thanks for the info - If you've got the font or file that would be great.
Thanks to dtrain too for summoning you back.
