Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Upgrade questions/opinions

I am relatively new to biking, but I am starting to ride a lot more miles training for a triathalon. I have a 2006 Diamondback Podium 2 bike that I really like but would like to make some upgrades. I don't want to spend a ton of $$ and all the options are a bit confusing. The two components I am thinking about upgrading are 1) crankset and 2) wheelset. The crankset is the only part of the bike I really don't like, I am not sure I can describe it other than it doesn't feel right. The current crankset is FSA RPM triple. What are some decent options/brands for upgrading? I have seen some Shimano 105 and Ultegra's on ebay relatively inexpensive. Are these significant upgrades?

The wheels are Alex DA22. I was looking at some Mavic OpenPro's with Ultegra hubs. Are these a significant upgrade?

Hello Nutra. well in my humble opinion and soon to be corrected here. for racing or triathalons your wheels would be best investment for an upgrade. getting a pair of "race wheels" with a significant weight savings not only make the static bike lighter it decreases your 'rotational' weight and wiill make the bike accelrate faster and climb better. I am not familiar with your cranks set so I cannot comment much on why you do not like it. but most racing bikes use a double chainring set up and not a triple. on modern bikes making a significant change on your crankset/ chainrings may result in having to change your front derailuer and shifter also.
