To rebuild or not to rebuild
Some of you might remember that three months ago I was hit by a reckless driver. I got a badly broken leg and a real banged up bike.
Just a day or two before the injury, my custom Mondonico frame arrived from Italy. After waiting six months for it, it has remained in the box for another three months. As soon as I can ride again (4-6 weeks, maybe), I will have it built.
It was my hope that my Schwinn (now wrecked) would be my beater. This bike will not be available for a while since it is evidence in my suit. My attorney thinks that nothing should be done with it until we are on the way to a settlement--which might not come until early next year. He is also a very knowledgeable cyclist and thinks that I should not rebuild this frame because it was stressed by the impact. This is the opinion of another person I respect also. However, a friend who build bikes thinks that the frame looks OK and that I should rebuild it.
So what do you folks think, should I rebuild my 1999 Schwinn Supersport? Most of the Shimano 105 components seem to be OK except for 2 bent chainrings. The wheels are OK, too, even though the front wheel was separated from the bike when the fork was destroyed. It is a $900 bike which I bought for $750 new.
Thanks.

I would get another beater now. It may be a long time before you will be in a position to rebuild this bike and by then, the settlement should offer you opportunities beyond fixing the old Schwinn. And even if it could be rebuilt, the psychological element may render the bike less than what it was before. Why wait?
It's kind of like fixing a car after a bad crash - it may look good and the mechanic and insurance company may say it's fine, but it's never the same.

Rich,
Have you considered buying a new/used frame, fork, and chainrings and moving the remaining components from the Schwinn? Since Terry's already done a fitting for you, you should have all the numbers you need to find a frame that suits you. You can probably find something on eBay for a reasonable price.
Hope that your recovery is coming along and that you'll soon be pedaling along on your Mondonico with a big grin on your face!
