Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Are the curves in the road the only thing slowing you down?

Sustained effort,

Solo, 23+ mph is fast.
Group, 30+ mph is fast.

Pro sprints (e.g. le Tour) can end up at 45 mph.

Downhill, 50+ mph is fast.

Others may disagree.

Sounds reasonable for sustained speeds. I'll add that for a solo effort, speeds over 30 are not too difficult to achieve for short bursts.

I did 35 MPH - ONCE, on the flat. My usual MAX on a flat is 30-32. Not for long, at all, just touching it, and crashing back to 20 or so. ND IT TAKES A LOT FOR ME TO GET THERE!

But, then, I'm OLD!

This is pretty much my experience, except for that European Pro sprint stuff. I have no experience at that level.

The Cypress once did a 40 mph solo sprint, and even had a questionable video to back it up.

Fred Rompelberg achieved a verified speed of 268 kph drafting behind a modified dragster.

I totally believe it. I'm no great shakes on a bike, but when I was young I could break the 40 mph barrier. Now that I am 55 years old it takes a really good day to get to 38 mph on the flat with no lead out or tail wind. Most days 35 mph is good. Maybe I need a better bike.
