Think I will still be able to ride?

What bad luck this was so far my year I did workouts in the gym all winter for cycling followed a real training plan on the bike for the first time and was just feeling the effects av. speed up doing better on climbs but I crashed twice this week. Both times really hurt my wrist but kept riding what's a little pain, well it got a whole bunch worse and I finally saw a Doctor and it's broken. I get a cast on Friday I have a temp. now and I am using the trainer[no hands] do you think once I get the cast I can ride? the Doctor said tell the guy what you do and maybe he can fix it to work? right now I am freaking out it's like withdral.:(

lance broke his collar bone 3 months before and now he is in TDF. HTFU.

DScott 07-08-09 04:21 PM

Can you? Sure. Should you? I dunno...

Either way, I'd stop crashing. No matter what kind of cast they work up for you, it's not likely to completely protect your wrist if you fall again. Plus, having a cast might just increase your risk for more crashes.

Or, maybe you just need to be more like this guy. ;)

trojanman 07-08-09 04:37 PM

If you can safely shift and brake, you can ride.

Of course, crashing twice in one week tells me otherwise.........:D

Tyler Hamilton broke his collarbone during the first stage of the TDF back in 2003, secured a stage win later and placed 4th overall. Seems to me he may also have a very respectable result riding the Giro with a broken collarbone.

I think riding with broken bones is effin' nuts. If you wipe out, you could really hurt yourself. I'd talk to the doc and see what they advise.

cyclefreaksix 07-08-09 05:14 PM

Doesn't sound like you were riding too good before the cast. Think I'd hold off if'n I was you. Aside from the risk of further injury, that cast is gonna smell pretty dang funky after a couple of rides.

Georgebowen 07-08-09 05:18 PM

ride the trainer with the cast.

Increased bloodflow = faster fixed bones

I broke my navicular bone on my dirtbike, this can be dangerous since it gets low blood flow and cth ebone can die. So I ran on the treadmill everyday with the cast and it healed faster than expected....but still caste fingers to shoulder for 3-4 months.

TromboneAl 07-08-09 05:28 PM

Take your handlebars in with you and the doc can integrate it with the cast.

Actually besides this last week I had never crashed, one crash was in the rain I just lost the bike and second one may have been lack of control due to pain from first crash in a turn. From what I have seen crashing seems normal, it's why we shave our legs no?

No. We shave our legs because it makes the muscles show, putting fear into the hearts of our competitors on the start line. And women like it.

What you should do with your broken wrist depends on what bone you broke. If it's the navicular/scaphoid, you should follow your doctor's advice carefully. Otherwise it may take longer to heal, or perhaps never heal. (there's surgery for that but it's expensive).

And painful. And you still get the frikken cast for 8 weeks after the surgery.

DScott 07-08-09 10:12 PM

But forget about that. How's the bike?

If it makes you feel any better I fractured my collarbone 2 months ago and am back in the saddle... However, I must confess every week felt like a year. I guess I didn't do a very good job at cheering you up. Don't further injure your wrist, do any physical therapy the doc recommends and you'll be back in no time!

Stop sticking your arms out when you crash. Tuck & roll.

Get clip-on aero bars to take the weight off your wrist

if you are going to crash, do it like that.

I'd be riding the trainer a day or so after I get the cast and squeeze a ball whenever you are sitting around to reduce atrophy.

MONGO! 07-08-09 10:53 PM

Stick with the trainer.

Careful with the squeeze a ball thing.

If it's the navicular, they are notoriously hard to heal, and any usage of the wrist or hand may be detrimental.

If it's the navicular, check with your doctor and get explicit clearance / directions for ANYTHING you might think of doing. He'll probably even tell you to switch hands for your personal time too.

If it's not the navicular, then the risks of non healing are significantly reduced. But you should still clear your plans with your doctor.

saratoga 07-09-09 07:52 AM

That cast is gonna stink something serious as it is. Going riding with sweat running down your arm into the padding inside the cast won't help the situation.

Putting that kind of pressure on the wrist you're trying to heal sounds like a bad idea IMO. That said, I did ride MX with a broken wrist in a cast when I was younger and slightly less concerned with the possible negative consequences.

ridenow 07-09-09 08:24 AM

Depending on the cast, you probably won't be able to grip the bars or hood well enough. I broke my scaphoid inline skating and had to have surgery since it wasn't healing. I was off the bike for a long time. So, I inline skated since the cast was also a nice wrist guard. :) Hope you heal fast!

Breaking his leg and being in a cast didn't stop JFK Jr. from flying a plane. I say, "Go for it!"

I watched it and I can't tell for sure... he crossed wheels and ripped his tubie off, right?

AngryScientist 07-09-09 02:14 PM

i dont see you you could possibly shift the bike without the use of your wrist, which will probably need to be immobilized in the cast...

Uh, might want to ask his wife and her sister about that...

But you're right!

Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

Hell no!

Although it was over when JFK Jr hit the water.

Instant single speed!

Just make sure you pick a good gear before you get the cast on...
