Yellow thing on Helmet

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yellow thing on Helmet

I don't know if this is the right place to post this or not, but anyway. What is the yellow thing on the helmet of the riders. I saw one on a Garmin rider, it looks like a transmitter of some sort.

Mods please move this if I posted wrong, thanks.

My wife just asked me the same thing. I have no idea, I'm curious, too.

I think it was race radio, I am guessing they had wireless bluetooth earpieces.

I'm sitting here watching the stage on the DVR - they were talking about it. It is indeed race radio. Apparently first used in '91 by team Motorola.

[edit] Helmet-mounted in '91, I think

The difference now is bluetooth earpieces. No wires. Very cool.

yes it's a radio and during two stages (10 and 13) they will not be permitted to use them...could be interesting.

they are race radios

they are not bluetooth because you can see the wire running from the transmitter to the riders earpiece

they are being trialed because jerseys and skinsuits are getting tighter and tighter. with food and water taking priority in the pockets it made sense to throw the transmitter on the helmet to free up space

there's a video spotlight of it on velonews.com or bicycling.com s website

If I remember correctly, they are utilizing the Motorola FV series of walkie talkies with the ear bud and PTT microphone. At least Garmin is using them. Astana was using some big radio that was placed within their bibs/jersey. The reason they aren't using a wireless/bluetooth rig is so that the riders aren't losing earbuds during the race. Last year at the Tour, if you had one of the cheap Motorola radios you can buy almost anywhere, you could listen to team communications. This year they supposedly changed to a digital radio for secure communications. It is nice living by and working with Motorola and their employees from time-to-time

The transponder is on the bike itself right? Not the helmet.

In case its a photo finish, they use the transponder at finish line to find out who came in first. Could be?

It's the Garmin team's radio transceiver. Most other teams keep it in one of their jersey pockets. (In contrast, the official race transponder to generate finishing times has to be affixed on the same place on all racers' bikes, as shown by Diegomayra above.)

In the USPS/Discover days, Lance's teams had jerseys with custom pockets to house the radio transceiver. Lance opted to keep it in a pocket positioned in his center lower back, even as wind tunnel tests proved it was not the most ideal placement.

Team Motorola of the mid 90s was the first team in the peloton to use a race radio (rightfully so, given the sponsor's product line). Obviously, an advantage was soon realized and other teams soon adopted.

The TdF organizers are banning the use of race radios in Stages 10 and 13 of the TdF this year to observe any dynamics it (re)introduces to the race.

And now you know the rest of the story...

This is what VeloNews live coverage said about them

[Comment From Steve in Brighton ]
Any idea what those boxes strapped to the helmets of 2-3 of the Garmin riders are? Julian Dean had one, maybe Ryder.

CPelkey: You know, we were wondering that, too. This morning, I emailed Jonathan Vaughters for an answer.

This is what he sent back:
