Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pulling sucks..

Due to my work schedule I dont make it to group rides very often during the week.. and I avoid the weekend ones like the plague..

Last night was my first group ride of the season.. I suck.. I know this.. but I like to talk trash and not back it up.. well I had to go last night to try and backup some trash talk id been carrying on about..

Needless to say I got "Pushed" into the A group..

Im a solo rider, I enjoy 15-16mph paces and just taking my time..

Last night.. 25 miles, 20mph pace.. I would be just fine tucked in behind the largest guy I could find in the group.. then it would be my turn to pull and within a few min id feel the sting set into my legs and my lungs start burning.. It freaking sucks pulling!

Needless to say, i did not die and or throw up on anyone.. I did adjust my seat mid ride which was odd for an A group to stop.. but apparently a couple of them were like.. Hey do your knees hurt.. im like yeah my right one on the left side of the cap is getting pretty tender..

we stopped up my seat and it felt like I was using different muscles.. Apparently I was wayy too comfy on my fit and not in a stronger riding position..

To sum it up..
I suck
I talk trash
I dont back it up
I take short pulls
Pulling sucks..
I suck.

unless you're going up hill, or into some major headwind, a 20mph pace is a warm up.

Just curious, if 20mph is the warmup, what's the warmed up speed?

I've just started group riding and I suck at pulling too, not because I'm not strong enough to pull an A ride but because I've been riding solo so long I find it hard to modulate my speed properly for the group. I ask a lot of questions, which must be annoying to the ride leaders, but I want to do it properly and safely. There is no substitute for experience I'm sure...hence I get out on a group ride whenever possible and save my balls-to-the-walls efforts for my solo rides.

my fast sunday ride here paces between 22-25 usually, and i've sat in on team rides that pace in the high 20s for extended periods.

personally i'm not interested in long flat paceline based races, so i find pacing at 25 mph for 2 hours boring as hell.

Everything is relative, given terrain, wind, size and ability of the group. Our Tueday night ride rolls along at 27-32mph for most of the ride after warming up at about 20mph. Remember its flat down here.

But botto is correct, 20 mph? The bugger flicking pace in the races and fast rides I do is 21-23 mph.

I'm really slow, and bad at trash talking.

But in the group rides I've done, the pulls switch off a turnover rate of less than a minute. 45 seconds to a minute I'd say. How long are yours? I only ask because you said your legs are burning "within a few minutes."

If you're riding with guys considerably faster than you, your only obligation is to get to the front, count to three mississippi, and smoothly rotate off the front. Period. If you're pulling for longer than that, don't.

Every time im at the bike shop i trash talk... they all take it in good humor cause thats all it is...

"I dont do group rides.. I dont want people getting sucked into the Vortex I create when I pedal.."

"I snapped that chain on my recovery ride... I have to dip my hard ride chains in Adamantium"

crap like that..

Im a casual rider... the guys at the shop ive become friends with are A riders... I held my own and kept up.. took my turn pulling and held the pace.. and didnt crash or screw anything up.. I think I did just fine for my fitness level

When it was my turn to pull, I didnt accelerate and I pointed out road hazards all while holding a 21 22mph pace for my pulls.. I can barely feel my legs today.. I wonder why..

My longest pull was about 5 min on a flat, and once that flat was over.. I rotated off quickly.

It was fun.. but im far too bad to do a group ride again.. Ill just ride alone and say I suck as I ride..

Only two people would ever pull for five minutes.

Time in the saddle /experience and just riding will change your opinion of pulling. Nothing like a "Good Pull" from your buds to make it all worth while.

20mph is not too hard if you keep your pull under 1min, even if you're not in the best of shape.

Pulling makes you stronger. Get out there and ride more often with the group.

On our team rides we have rotating pacelines, so we pull and rotate off as soon as the last rider is safely back. The pulls are brief, everyone gets a turn, and everyone gets to pull frequently. A five-minute pull is crazy. How long did the other riders pull?

That said, I pulled a new-to-the-area rider, a really tall guy on a new Madone, for about 3 miles last night. He seemed to struggle to stay on my wheel (23-25 mph) so I didn't yell at him for sucking my wheel so long. I was inordinately satisfied to have pulled someone twice my size and half my age without killing myself.

Hit the nail on the head. If you're in a group of guys stronger than you, just make sure gaps don't open on the wheel in front of you,and when its your turn to pull, make it as short as practicable.

The guy whose wheel I was on last Saturday could have used the same advice when he let a gap open while we were cruising at 27mph during a short stretch of flat/mild downhill with a 20-25 man group. Supposed to be some nice speed work into mid-ride rest stop became an exercise in bridging a gapped group. Fun times.

Besides, pulling becomes more enjoyable when you can actually ride people off your wheel.
