Visiting Honolulu. Rentals ? Group Rides ?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Visiting Honolulu. Rentals ? Group Rides ?

I'll be visiting Honolulu next month Aug 18-28, staying at the Sheraton on Waikiki Beach. I'd like to rent a bike a few times (or even borrow if a generous soul exists).

If possible I'd also like to hook up for some group rides so I can see the area and find the good routes without getting lost. I'd prefer an "A" type group ride at least a few times.

Thoughts ? Suggestions ? Cautions ? TIA

Oahu is the most congested island in Hawaii and Waikiki is the most congested part of Oahu.
I don't live there anymore, so can't comment on current group rides or rentals.
The biggest bike club on the island is hbl.org and they may have group rides on their web site.
My advice is get out of Waikiki as quickly and as often as possible.

Thanks. It probably wouldn't be my first choice of location if I was alone, but we're going with kids who will need things to do, and I have a long lost brother who moved there recently.

For renting, i would suggest this shop: http://www.bikeshophawaii.com/rentals.html

You can ride from the shop, through Waikiki, through a wealthy residential area and continue on up the East side of the island... along the Coast. I did it twice when i visited, and it was nice. This shop offers a map. It is a pretty common ride.

Boca Hawaii rents road bikes. I believe they are Specialized Allez aluminum. I had some great rides on Oahu. PM me and I'll send you the Garmin links. Also, talk to BF member Sprocketman: he lives on Oahu.
