50 at 50

New comittment is to ride my age on my birthday every year so today was 50 miles (actually ended up 51)

Goal is a Century at 100, without missing a year from here out.

zonatandem 07-11-09 04:40 PM

Nice goal. Bet you don't make it.

merlinextraligh 07-11-09 04:41 PM

^ I'd take the bet, but I'm afraid you wouldn't be around to collect from.:)

sojourn 07-11-09 04:41 PM

Happy Birthday merlinextraligh! And welcome to the DARK side....youngen!:thumb:

zonatandem 07-11-09 04:57 PM

Geezzzz, I'd only be 126 years old if I lived to collect!
BTW: Happy 50th B'day (I can't remember back that far!).

crtreedude 07-11-09 05:01 PM

Man, I had no idea you were so old!? (in other words, my age. )

camhabib 07-11-09 05:04 PM

Happy birthday, and kudos on the 50 miles. Hope to be able to do that soon.

SteelCan 07-11-09 05:13 PM

My grandmother is 104yo and rides a stationary bike 3-4x/week (though just like everyone on BF she exaggerates about how far she rides)
Allowing for the possibility of requiring a spinner (tough to see potholes), I think/hope you win the bet.

Grumpy McTrumpy 07-11-09 05:18 PM

I think it's a great idea

AngryScientist 07-11-09 05:23 PM

happy birthday sir, and excellent goal.

kayakdiver 07-11-09 05:27 PM

If I do this I get to ride less miles on my B-day:thumb:

Drag 07-11-09 05:40 PM

Very cool!

Flatballer 07-11-09 05:44 PM

Hmm, maybe I should start this. Although, it would mostly be a recovery ride for a few years, only 21 miles this year, not even a 90 minute SST session.

Good work. I hope you make your goal. With modern medicine, 100 years might be the norm by the time you get there.

Jynx 07-11-09 05:51 PM

I'll start this for my next birthday but it is no real accomplishment to do 23 miles.

BillStohler 07-11-09 06:04 PM

do it

My grandfather did a head stand every year on his birthday until he was 90. He lived to 93. One of my great aunts lived to 101. I think she was a down hiller.

I started doing 2x my age a couple of years ago, but I really don't like 100+ mile rides. I'd rather do a ride like today - 51 miles, 3500 ft. climbing, 18 mph avg. With a lot of waiting around at tops of hills for younger guys. ;)

Yeah, at this point its not much of a stretch. Tommorow's ride will be 65 miles.

Only challenge for the next few years will be actually having the time to do a decent ride when the birthday falls not on a weekend.

Creakyknees 07-11-09 08:02 PM

Yeah I've been doing 2x but when I turn 50... we'll see. I'm not into ultralong rides. This year it's 86.

gapowermike 07-11-09 08:04 PM

MXL I didn't realize you were such a geezer. Now I feel even worse that you made it up Brasstown....

You can modify the terms a bit by riding at least the number of miles equal to your birthday...

msincredible 07-11-09 09:13 PM

Happy Birthday merlinextraligh! :bday:

This is what I do.

Beaker 07-11-09 10:01 PM

Happy Birthday merlinextraligh - now you're 50, will BF award you the extra "t" in your username?

hendrick81 07-11-09 10:08 PM

Happy bday...
