Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Fenders on Seven Axiom?

Folks, I am purchasing a Seven Axiom SG and have indicated to my bike shop I would like the bike to have fender mounts. Well, being Seven is a 'custom' builder they can oblige no problem. But- before I sign off on the design - I am now thinking that fenders will require the bike to be designed differently and will make the bike more sluggish. I think they will need to lengthen the chain stays and also need to use long reach brakes. This to me will make the bike 'handle slower' and have the brakes be not as responsive. Anybody have any experience with the trade offs of designing a bike for fenders? And how about Seven's designs in general related to these trade offs? I kind of want a bike for winter and summer riding combined - but am I asking for too much?

Thanks Mates!

My tentative build:
Seven Axiom SG
Ultergra Triple
Mavic Ksyrium SL

My riding habits:
Age 46
2-3 centuries each summer
total miles per week at peak season 150-200

Current bike:
2006 Lemond Zurich (CF/Reynolds half and half)

I wouldn't do it. I'd simply p-clip some fenders to that Lemond.

if you're going to ride the Seven in the rain much, then get fender mounts and clearance built in. Full fenders make a huge difference.
