Cyclists are not athletes...?
I've been having a dicussion now for about a year with a co-worker,with all the hype of the Tour de France and so on... he said that Cyclists are not athletes 'cause it does not take much skills to ride a bike... well I've been to the point to kill the guy sometimes,he compares Football, Baseball and Basketball as athletes but cyclist? Nahhhhh, he's getting too much under my skin now... funny 'cause since I'm a free diver he says.well to free dive 60-80 feet while spear fishing is OK but not cycling....

I would say something like, "Skill sports are sports like darts, bowling and golf. They are sports where skills trump athleticism and endurance."
Then maybe, "Cycling is a sport that requires strength, a great power to weight ratio, intelligence (usually) aerobic and anaerobic fitness."
He would say, "huh?"
And I would say, "It's your round, dumbass."
Surprised?

This doesn't sound like an argument you can win. It would be like someone trying to argue the merits of baseball or golf with me ... when I can see absolutely no point to either.

The funny thing is that he is out of shape.. he says let's go to a baseball field to see what an athlete is... I was born in s Baseball culture and no offense would not compare the athletisism of a pro baseball player with a pro cyclist..not even close..

Your colleague is a dumbass. stop talking to him and if he speaks to you again, flush his head in the toilet.

Does he ride a bike of some sort? or is he too unskilled?
Steps to Success:
1. If he does, I would invite him on a group ride, hoping that he accepts the offer.
1. a. Make sure that you say it in a "put up or shut up" manor, usually "traditional" sports-type people will accept any challenge, up to and including wrestling with a bus.
1. b. Another option is to propose the challenge in the form of a bet, thereby forcing him to accept or turn in his man club membership card.
2. Take him on said group ride....
3. Watch! him getting spit out the back miserably gasping for air
4. Ask what he thinks about cycling after he has been chewed up and spit out after the ride
5. ???
6. Profit
or just not care...

Wasn't there a bit uproar a year or two ago when someone on ESPN made a similar claim? My bet is that this co-worker heard that broadcast on ESPN and it arguing someone elses theory, not even his own, and if shown a simple explanation and dictionary definition of the word, he wont' have much else to say.

Surely you have better things to do - in life, as at work - than to engage in idiotic conversations.
Then again, this is coming from someone who is currently browsing BF....
