Is ASSOS worth it?

Is ASSOS worth it?

First I focused on saddles. I went through about 5 of them. I finally wound up Terry Fly Tri Gel Saddle.

Then I went from Pearl Ultrasensor shorts to Campagnolo bib short. I prefer bibs to shorts.

I do some short rides (15 to 20 miles), but on weekends longer rides of 40 to 75 miles and would like to try a century ride. I do not race.

At the end of the longer rides, I can’t wait to get off the bike. My question is Is ASSOS worth it?

Correct me if I am wrong, in the Campionissimo line, there are three different models, one is T.FI UNO, then the T.FI Mille and then T.FI 13. I went to the ASSOS site. I am still not sure what the differences are in the Campionissimo line.

Can you help? Which would be best for my type of riding?

A reply with as much info with the differences between the Bibs would be appreciated

Thanks

(PS: I already use the ASSOS Crème. Great stuff)

BTW: Any suggestions on where to buy?

botto 07-21-09 07:07 AM

yes.

camhabib 07-21-09 07:07 AM

I guess the value of the added comfort over a cheaper alternative would be different from person to person. To some, saving the 15g on the bottle cage is "worth" the $200, while to others it isn't. I personally like them a lot (have the FI.13 S5) but I don't have too much experience with various brands or miles to really compare. They do run small tho, so if you're buying without trying on, I would size up.

ElJamoquio 07-21-09 07:21 AM

Yes.

agarose2000 07-21-09 07:25 AM

No.

BTW, TONS of Assos threads, even recently. Try the search for a lot of info.

ri_us 07-21-09 07:26 AM

Absolutely not. Different companies cut shorts in different sizings. I would suggest you try some different ones out and see how they feel. Most people can find much cheaper options.

Also, can the Assos cream and get Chamois Butt'r. It's the same thing and it's a fraction of the price.

Check out Competitive Cyclist

I got my Assos at lickbike for nearly $40 less shipped than Competitive Cyclist.

Lickbike has some good deals on last years models.. I love the Mille Bibs, would not wear anything else for 50+ mile rides.

Univega 07-21-09 09:07 AM

Any help on WHICH bib (T.FI UNO, T.FI Mille, T.FI 13) and the differences would be appreciated.
The ASSOS site description (http://www.assos.ch/#/collections/as...es/men/shorts/) is not much help.

botto 07-21-09 09:10 AM

seek and ye shall find.

Performance makes a new bib called the ultra lite [red w/white straps]. I wore them on the first part of a double century and wore the Assos Mille the second part. I had no pain [using a SLR Carbonio saddle] even after that 12.5 hour ride. Stick with the Assos and if you can afford it buy two.

Depends on the length of the ride and how sweaty you get down there. The more sweat, the more abrasive it gets. The Assos has a lot of high density foam. I think that makes a big difference. If I were in a century ride with personal support, I would like to try to change shorts (or bibs) at least once. That is, get a nice dry (no sweat) shorts to see how that affects comfort. Then again, I would have to dry my sitting area as well.

You have been a Member for over four years on BF, and you really need to ask now.

aham23 07-21-09 09:47 AM

yes. eBay. good day. later.

kwrides 07-21-09 09:57 AM

FI.Uno - good all around short, not as much padding as the Mille

FI.Mille - lots of padding in the chamois, good for longer rides, but will feel quite thick until you get used to it. I thought I hated mine at first, and then they became my go-to 60+ mile short. Probably overkill for a quick 20 or 30 miler.

Haven't worn the FI.13

Yeah, I know…..I'm a little slow.

Well as you ride more you go faster, (in my case, not much faster) longer and learn more. I started out with Gel shorts. Horrible. I soon learned that more padding was not always better. I have since tried Pearl Ultrasensors, Campanolo and the Castelli KISS bib. Some people swear by ASSOS and I have always wondered if they are really worth the $$$$. For short rides of 25 or less, most any bib is ok. As I said, I did 66 last year and wondered if a ASSOS would have made the last miles more comfortable.

No. For the price of one pair of Assos bibs, I bought a week's worth of Falconi bibs from Love2Pedal. For me, the Falconis work well enough to spend 6-8 hours in the saddle, which is all I need. YMMV.

You can get terrible advice like this all day long on BF.

JUst ask anybody who puts a ton of miles on the road, or anybody who you respect as a cyclist.

Everybody I run across who fits this criteria are usually wearing Assos .

Ebay is probably your best bet, if you do not have a good hook up at your LBS.

I've owned two of the 3 you mention above and the Uno is a big improvement on both for me. Much better chamois and better fit.

I might suggest buying locally if you can just to be sure you get the right fit. Then you can go ebay or whatever later if needed.

Note, Assos fit anatomically correct for a riding postion. They WILL NOT be comfortable standing up. Check out the review here: http://www.competitivecyclist.com/za...D%26TFC%3DTRUE

They also have good write ups for all three. Here's the Uno: http://www.competitivecyclist.com/ro...4748.16.1.html

Excellent link at Competitive Cyclist. Thank you!

Definitely worth it. Lickbike has good prices. Sounds like you want a pair of Mille's.

PeanutDance 07-23-09 02:14 PM

I bought 4 hammer bibs last year, I wish I would've bought one pair of Unos instead.

Now the hammer bibs are for trainer use only.

Really, you can find Unos for $150 online, $135 if you're ok with last year's model. They aren't THAT much more expensive and definitely worth the premium.

clausen 07-23-09 03:15 PM

I loved my bibs before they became to big. It sounds like you may have a fit issue or you need to get out of the saddle more.
