Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My helmet reeks most of the time. I actually take it in the shower with me pretty regularly, but there's only so much you can do...

Fortunately here in FL I am not alone. Pretty much everyone reeks by the end of a hard ride.

Yes, we've already established that putting your helmet in the washing machine is a bad idea.

Sun tan lotion? Really? Honestly? That **** doesn't even smell bad, I always get stuck with that one stinky BO smelling person on group rides. It's always on the hard rides too where we're strung out and I can't move up. How is it I can go out and smell like a damn Abercrombie & Fitch on the hardest rides, and someone always has to smell like a diaper full of damn Indian food?

I hate this sport.

Most folks with bad BO can't smell their BO. You may think you smell like Abercrombie & Fitch...

No I've been told I don't stink, I had never thought about it before. I have to be going hard and longgggg before I stink.

I have the same thing. Lucky us.
My old boss was a massage therapist and she used to give me a massage after long rides. According to her I did not stink but smelled like the outdoors.
Making my massage therapist pass out would be a wonderful way to loose my discount.

Somewhat random but I stopped eating dairy and red meat for a few weeks and stopped having to wear deodorant.

What you eat can definitely contribute to your body odor, no doubt about that.

you're not complaining about body odor. you might consider telling those 2 individuals that their laundry detergent and suntan lotion have strong odors. those things are easy to change. if you were complaining about body odor that would be a delicate thing to address, but you know what? addressing it with them privately would be better than their being subjected to "avoidance" by their co-riders. I can see them becoming very uneasy from that kind of treatment, whereas, being told they need to shower before riding, etc would be much more humane. even if they quit the group from embarrassment - their next group would benefit from your honesty.

If you got stuck anywhere behind Mr. Stinky (not just directly on his wheel but anywhere downwind) you were screwed...since not breathing during a club ride is pretty foolish.

This guy absolutely reeked of nasty eyelid-melting BO. We would have killed for some coconut oil!

We have already established in numerous prior threads that the helmet goes in the dishwasher. Why would anyone use the washing machine?

a certain racer got diahrea during a race and the peloton took turns squirting his arse with our bottles to keep the smell down.

LOL at this. I could've sworn I saw on here a discussion about a lady who had heard about going to bathroom while on the bike and decided she'd try it for a change. Well, she didn't pee but crapped herself while riding and nobody wanted to ride behind her for the rest of the ride (and it was a 80-100 mile ride). I'd love of it somebody could point me back to that post, I need another chuckle on it. Wherever I read it they actually had a link back to I believe a California board where the woman posted her story herself and it was verified by other members of the board as being legitimate. I'm still laughing just thinking about that post!
Thanks!
