5.2 Trek Madone 2007 vs 4.5 Trek Madone 2009

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

5.2 Trek Madone 2007 vs 4.5 Trek Madone 2009

Can anyone here help me decide between these two bikes? I have wanted a carbon frame road bike for quite some time now. After some research, I have narrowed my choices down to a Trek Madone. The only decision that remains is which one of these bikes should I go with:

5.2 Discovery Channel Edition 2007 with the OCLV Carbon frame and full Ultegra = $2,100
(the dealer I am buying from has this last one sitting around for the past year)

verses

4.5 2009 with the TCT Carbon frame, Shimano 105, Bontrager Race = $2,000

Basically, I am in a toss between the better equipped & better carbon frame 5.2 madone, which forces me to settle for the 07 style body or move down a knot to the 4.5 series which has the new body and the "improved" technology.

Unfortunately, my budget does not allow me to go for an 2009 5.2 and it looks like in order for me to get a carbon frame I have to spend around 2 grand.

Which of these two bikes mentioned above do you think I should buy?

I'm assuming you have ridden them both, and you have no preference? If that be the case, I'd go with the '09. After awhile, if you really want to upgrade components on that one, you can.

Just my 2 cents.......... but what a nice decision to have to make!

Contador didn't win on either one of those frames. He won in 07 on an 08-spec OCLV Black frame.

Does the 2007 bike have a 10-speed drivetrain?

Good point! So the 07 is the last generation Madone? If that's true, then I would buy the 09.

Uh, everyone here seems to be going with the 2009. I disagree.

1) While I can't speak for all brands, I know that Bianchi has seriously cut corners on it's bikes in 2009 to keep costs low. The shop you've gone to may advertise 2009 as a "better technological" bike, but bike components have increased in price in the last year. To keep sales up, bike brands have cut corners, used cheeper componentry (ie, 105) to keep costs down.

2) 105 is not Ultegra, no matter what year it's made.

3) Spend the extra $100 on a better bike.

Whichever is more comfortable for you. You can't lose either way.
I have an 07 Madone 5.9 that I love. I rented an 08 4.5 on vacation last year and thought it was pretty good.

Buy want you like but I would get the '07. Try to offer them $2,000.

If you fit equally well on both of them, go with the 5.2. The OCLV frames are better than the TCT ones - they are built up to give different characteristics in different areas of the frame, while the TCT ones are more plain vanilla.

Also, ultegra is a considerable upgrade over 105.

+1 on what eric said---OCLV is made here in the USA---tct is made overseas, I think in Taiwain. Not that there's anything wrong with a carbon frame from taiwain. I ride one. I just think the OCLV is a better bike frame. I would also go by which bike fits you better. If I'm not mistaken the two frames have different geometries.
