Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Got a letter today, they admitted their servers had been breached in Dec 08 and switched to a different security firm on March 3rd, 2009.

+1 It's good that they admitted it to all and informed us, but weak as hell that they waited this long. I'm sure the slow timing has to do with legal maneuvering trying to see how culpable they would be for this data theft and how much collateral damage they would incur as a result of the bad pub, but still, very weak.

Seems like some free items as a peace offering would be a nice gesture.

Just got mine the other day. At the very end they included an offer for 30% off my next order. Too bad I'm scared to use it

I got mine a week ago. Back in January some a**hat tried to buy $1000 worth of DVDs using one of my credit cards, and paid for photo prints using another card. Luckily the movie retailer thought something was strange and called my wife. We cancelled both cards. I got the photo prints in the mail, that was weird - just pics of someone's family.

I called Nashbar after I got the letter and apparently I had used both of those credit cards at Nashbar. The lady I spoke with said they had something like 64,000 acounts compromised. She did have one sort of funny story, one customer had 1000 digital cameras delivered to their house. I tried to visualize the UPS man pulling up in front of my house to deliver all that.

Got my latter today, a credit card that I used with them was used for fraudulent charges a few months ago. Discover was great about it, and I've done the free fraud alert every 90 days since then (I mean really why not).

Kinda lame it took so long for them to admit, but I guess its better than nothing. I wonder if I can use paypal if I want to use my 30% off

Since this was posted on another thread last week, I'll chime back in with a +1 for Discover - the day after I got the letter, I had a new card and number without requesting it and a request to destroy the old one (no problem!). I didn't have any fradulent charges and wish I had gotten the letter earlier since I placed an order the SAME day I received the 30% off offering - go figure.

There was an online purchasing thread earlier today as well that suggested Paypal or a single use credit card number (available from a variety of credit card companies) to protect yourself online.

It's a shame Nashbar doesnt use Paypal. That alone would greatly help them win back some of the customers who are hesitant to use buy from them - incl yrs truly.

+1 ==> my credit card was ripped off twice in the last 18 mos. -- thx to this most likely. I think I'll send a copy of the note to my credit card bank.

I got a letter last week, but no coupon of any sort. Also, nothing even approaching an apology was included in the letter I received.

Not that it really matters, as I haven't placed an order with them in 3+ years. Nor do I plan to.

Other threads on here note that Paypal will generate a one time use CC# for an exact amount to effective accomplish what you are looking for. So you fill your Nashbar cart, see the total is $97.85, go to Paypal, generate a Visa # that is good for $97.85, paste Visa # into Nashbar, and your paypal acct is charged $97.85 and that Visa # is no longer valid in case it is stolen. I haven't used this feature yet but if you look at any of teh PBK fraud threads, many BFers claim they use it.

^^^
Certain credit card issuers do this too - the number expires after one month and can only be used at a single vendor (so that you can handle returns and such). Citibank is one. The vendor never actually sees anything about your real credit card. Everything: number, expiration date, VVC code (or whatever it's called)... is made up.

Does this work with any PayPal account, or only if you have a PayPal-issued credit card?
