Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

edge 305 cadence magnet

so I lost the cadence magnet from my crank arm.
Garmin sells the replacement kit for $11 but takes like 5 days to ship.

any idea what kind of magnet I could use until I get the replacment one?
where the heck do you even buy magnets? target?

Any magnet will work. Go to a good harward store (Orchard Supply, most ACE). Some really sticky double-sided tape or a dab of a metal adhesive should do the job.

I get the really strong ones that are at hobbie stores/craft stores and I attach them to the end of the pedal spindle with clear caulk. Works amazingly well. So well that when that "factory" one shows up you'll throw it in the trash.

Not just any magnet, as weaker magnets (ceramic or Alnico 5) may require the magnet to be too close to the sensor. A rare earth magnet (Neodymium) is extremely strong and that's what you want.

If you have, or know someone with a Sonic toothbrush, each head that finally wears out provides you with two Neodymium magnets! Note that these magnets oxidize readily if their protective coating is chipped or missing. A bit of epoxy glue will reseal the magnet. Mount to you crank are with double sided tape and a nylon tie.

These Neodymium-Iron-Boron magnets are EXTREMELY powerful, and can be used with curved cranks where the crank-chainstay distance is too far for other magnets to work reliably. (Also good for greater spoke-chainstay distances for speed sensing.) I don't know if they are powerful enough to interfere with the transmitter's internal signal processing, so if you get one, you're on your own.

Here is where I got my Neodymium-Iron-Boron magnets.

https://www.rare-earth-magnets.com/detail-ID-126.html

Needless to say I had to buy 1 package which means I have 11 too many magnets. They are fun to play with. Each one has 8lbs of pull force.

Send me a pm with your address, I'll mail you a couple. I'm in soCal too

I read that Cateye cadence magnets will work, so I ordered a few direct from their website. $1.87 each.

This is what I use and it is strong enough to stick to the pedal bolt without falling off or needing any adhesive.

A good rare earth magnet and put it right on the pedal insert where it comes through the crank arm. I've had mine there for over a year with no additional adhesive and it's stayed in place.

How do you remove the magnets from the Sonicare brush head?

Yep. The magnet from a ~20-year-old Cateye Astrale triggers mine.

Best way is with an adjustable wrench (aka "Crescent wrench"). Adjust wrench jaws to fit on magnet, then use twisting motion and magnet will pop free.

Never ever throw away a Sonicare head without recovering the magnets! They are good for all sorts of things.
