Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Buying advice for a used bike

i'm thinking about purchasing a used bike and looking at craigslist and all that. i would probably be interested in doing that to find my first road bike. unfortunately my budget is low-- ideally i'm looking to spend around $500, but willing to go up to $1000 if i feel it's worth it. do you have any advice for me in terms of how to find a good bike.

i'm planning to go into local bike shops to test ride some and see what feels right and learn from the folks at the shop, but i still have a lot to learn and am looking for all the advice i can get. thanks! i'm located in the south bay in the bay area, ca.
