Out of the saddle climbing technique?
As I watched the Tour this year I was amazed at the smooth, fluid, compact stroke of the guys when climbing out of the saddle. When I do so I tend to throw the bike around a lot more, front wheel gets a little more twisty, and I'm quite sure far less efficient than I could be. Is there a specific technique they use to remain so "compact" or is it just practice and a conscious effort to be smooth like that until it becomes second nature. Ideas? Opinions?

There's nothing wrong with thrashing, an "I am Specialized" video of Cancellara showed him throwing the bike around. It's actually relaxing when you get into a rhythm.
To minimize sway, go to a lower gear, tighten arms, shoulders, abdominal core and gluts to counteract the inertial left sway when right foot goes down and left foot goes up, and converse. It's more efficient to do it at higher cadences, e.g. 80+. For example, accelerate up a hill, and as your cadence increases, you'll notice that swaying decreases naturally to less than two inches at the saddle nose, and as you further accelerate, the nose becomes almost motionless. |
