Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

oh gah, those hammer gels are NASTY. The best gel's are gu, and the best flavor is chocolate, it tastes like warm icing...omg so good.

Bars = Chocolate brownie cliff bars...pick'em up @ your local walmart. Stay away from the cherry flavors.

+1 on the generic Nutri-grain bars. I have recently substituted my cookies and candy bars for those and fig netwons.

I agree that the chocolate brownie clif bars are awesome, but they look kind of nasty.

You can go with the White Chocolate Macadamia or the Peanut Toffee Buzz for a less digested look and better taste (IMO).

Primary: Clif Bars bought from my local supermarket for a buck.

Secondary: if I'm riding and feel like I'm bonking, peanut butter Powerbar from the convenience store.

Plus a banana.

No food unless the ride is longer than 100k, then Perpetuem and Hammer Gel. For example, last week I did a 200k permanent with a group, and consumed a total of 560 calories on the ride. Felt great the whole time.

Of course I had a solid breakfast three hours prior, and then had Recoverite immediately after.

I stick to HEED and Hammer Gel. I prefer to eat a Cliff bars before I ride, carrot cake, blueberry crisp, oatmeal raisin, or cherry almond. I really don't like any that have chocolate chips in them, they give me heartburn.

Odwalla Super Protein bars. They're cheap, and I like them.

I also do PB&J on long rides. Also bananas, sometimes some Nutella on bread. You just keep it in it's plastic sandwich bag, and don't touch it. Just eat it out of there. Then one wetted paper towel (wet before the ride, put in a seperate baggy), for your mouth area.

The wetted paper towel trick is nice for getting the salt off your face too, and keeping it out of your eyes.

<90 cents each at Costco; make most other nutrition bars taste like sawdust.

Honey Stinger protein bars. Peanut butter or dark chocolate almond. Great taste, almost 400 calories per bar. Very dense, a little goes a long way. They do tend to melt in the jersey pocket, but I manage. I get them whenever REI has a sale.

cheers

Since I only take them on the really long rides, I cut them in half (rectangles) and put them in a Bento Box since my pockets and seatbag are already full with the usual shorter ride stuff. My biggest issue with Powerbars is that it becomes difficult to open when it's that mushy, then I end up with half of the bar stuck to the wrapper and I have to scrape it off with my teeth.

#1 worst food for asthmatics, so I generally don't eat them during a ride. A raw potato is supposed to be better, but I can't get myself to eat it that way. For my next trick, I'm going to try cut up broccoli in a baggie... more potassium per serving than a banana or a potato.

I've been using Payday candy bars - peanuts, caramel, and whatever is in the center for long rides.
No chocolate n tastes good.

Sometimes on sale at supermarkets, like 3 for a $1 or something.

I was eating Clif bars. But recently discovered Bonk Breaker bars. Those digest a lot easier for me and I seem to get more energy out of them.
