Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shimano Ultegra 9 speed Shifter Repair

I have a problem with my shifting. When I clicked through the gears on the rear derailleur, there was one particular gear that a click on the shifter would not cause the derailleur to shift to. When I clicked the shifter again, it would shift to the gear after the one that was skipped. This only happened when shifting in one direction (i.e., down the cassette) and not in the other. How can i fix this?

I had this problem too. Check you RD hanger. When I took it to the shop to have it looked at the owner bent the hanger back in place and it shifts great now.

I should probably get a new hanger to keep around, just in case this one fails on me.

How old is your cable/housing? Maybe it's time to replace? Also, check for gunk under the bottom bracket where the cable slides. It doesn't sound like a shifter problem since you say that it is still 'clicking'

When I have had problems like this, it's usually been from the cable starting to break inside the shifter. It's a good idea to check the cable when you have shifting problems, or if the cable's more than a year old (6 months if you ride a lot), just replace it.

But sometimes its not the cable. Then it is often a worn chain, or a cassette which is worn- usually one or two cogs will start shifting poorly before the others, because you wear out your favorite cogs first.

Recently I had a really bad shifting problem with one cog. It was bad on both bikes, even the one with the new chain and cables. I finally disassembled the cassette and found that one tooth on the problem cog was broken off, and it was really worn.

^^^ Eric is right. Cable replacement is like $5 + 30 mins labor. If the cable breaks inside the shifter, you may not be able to fish it out, and you'll have to replace the entire shifter. Mine was getting pretty bad, had to replace the cable this weekend.

I replaced my cables recently for this reason. I wasn't hearing the 'click' when upshifting so I checked it out when I got home. The cable was down to just a few threads before completely snapping inside my shifter. The main thing I noticed was the shifter was not releasing tension no matter what gear I was in.

I'm now replacing cables every year.
