pronouncing toupe

is it 'toop' or 'too-pay'

BrianNippon 07-29-09 12:38 AM

I have a feeling it's like the hair product, haha.

'Too-pay'

liquefied 07-29-09 12:43 AM

plasticmaam12 07-29-09 12:50 AM

AngryScientist 07-29-09 05:20 AM

i think its more of : "tow-pay"

lukasz 07-29-09 05:25 AM

There's no accent on the e so it should be "towp." I actually have no idea though.

Pedaleur 07-29-09 05:58 AM

<Withdrawing my suggestion, since Specialized has it both with and without the accent.>

Egads! Do _not_ look it up on urbandictionary.com. Who knew Specialized was into that kind of thing?

emj2390 07-29-09 06:03 AM

specialized says too-pay a lot of people just abbreviate to tow-p

Worst saddle name EVER! I just say Alias.

What would you prefer they called it?
The "Poniard?" The "Hatchet?"

Maybe they'll call the replacement for it the "Bidet."

It's an American company, why use a French name that causes pronunciation confusion? As for better names, how about the Specialized S-1?

Didn't they redesign the Decibel helmet and call it the S-Works now? They should do the same for the saddle.

Is that pronounced Alley-ass or alley-is?

tigershark 07-29-09 08:43 AM

The bike Allez should actually be Aller.

Allez is the conjugated form of aller for the subject "vous" and "vous" meaning either "you" or "you guys".

I can't think of many situations when one would use the subject "vous" and the verb "aller" together except for maybe when asking someone a question such as "Allez vous au cine?" (you go to the movies?)

Or when you're struggling up a mountainside in France and July, and thousands of fans are yelling "ALLEZ ALLEZ ALLEZ!!" at you. I think that's probably what they were going for. :innocent:

tigershark 07-29-09 09:12 AM

....perhaps...

Matt Gaunt 07-29-09 09:29 AM

It's "toop" but in France they would put less emphasis on the 'p' than we do. It's sort of softer but still there. :thumb:

I once got "allez" shouted at me by a Toulousain cycling club going in the opposite direction. It's the equivalent of "go on" but doesn't translate literally.

fauxto nick 07-29-09 09:34 AM

I think it's pronounced "Just ride".

:D

I believe that the usage is in the imperative form in this case so "allez" would be correct. See this link.
