Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Just kidding.

Thanks to the constant marketing on the coverage of the Tour, I decided it was finally time to get one. I ride solo 98% of the time and after I got hit by a car a few weeks ago... well, I just feel a bit more prepared just in case.

What's nice is I can wear this when I'm riding my motorcycle(s) too. I have nothing to do with Road ID, I just think it's a great idea and worth the $20.

I have a "slush fund" that I buy all my toys out of...bike stuff, computer stuff. I get a weekly 'allowance" and I do PC repair on the side to fund that fund. I buy anything I want, wife asks no questions...works great.

When I bought my Road ID and showed my wife she handed a $20 back to me and said, "Thanks, I appreciate that."

'Nuff said.

Yep. My wife doesn't expect me to use my slush fund for Road ID or helmets.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one with one. It certainly makes things easier not having to explain packages arriving at the door or charges on the CC bill all the time. It was one of the best things we ever did for marital harmony.

My wife expects my slushfund to be used to take her to dinner, not buy bike schwag.

I just keep a photocopy of my driver's license in my seat bag.

If I had allergies or a medical condition I would wear a Road ID.

Maybe Dr.Pete will chime in but I don't think EMS folks are going through your seat bag. I don't think the DL is going to help much anyway...you're going to get emergency care regardless. The RoadID (or similar) more than anything lets them know who to contact.

The usefulness of the Road ID has been discussed at length, but it will suffice to say that it is more effective than anything you have in bag or pockets. It is also very helpful even without any specific medical conditions to alert family members in the event you can't. (Re: Military dog tags - the name and phone number of the emergency contact is the issue here, put a piece of tape on the back of your tags with that info and you are golden.)

The real question is.... did you put a good quote on it? If so, what?

And that was my main objective. If I was out cold (or worse), I'd like them to be able to call my wife/parents/brother right away. I used to carry a laminated card with me, but it got soaked from sweat and it's too easy to lose.

Exactly, if it's bad enough the cops will eventually find my ID which is why I carry it in my bag. The only purpose I see for a RoadID is if you have a medical condition or allergy you would want the emergency responders to know about. Other than that, knowing my name, address, etc. is pointless.

Without starting a big thing, I think it's the eventually that is the issue. When there is an accident the bike will not be anyone's first priority and there is a much bigger chance your bag ends up being lost, overlooked or discarded than one of your limbs.

That said, to each his own. I have one, and don't ride without it.

I can do that, but all my family (emergency contacts) are in New Jersey and I am in Florida so I'm not sure if they' be much help in an emergency. I do also carry my phone (which of course could be damaged in a crash and not work) with me as well. I like the tape idea though. a simple peice of masking tape would work perfect.

That sort of sank in for me a while back. In the event of a crash, the bike and I might not be snuggled up anymore. I switched to carrying my id in a pocket, but I do plan on ordering Road ID's for both my wife and me very soon.

How long have you been married? She may come around still. My wife of almost 3 years has recently come to accept the fact that if $20-50 every now and then keeps me happy, it's not such a bad thing.

We do have a seperate fund for dates, though... and yes it's much larger than my bike fund.

Back to the original topic, I carry one because (1) I want them to know I have asthma as it may clue them in to what happened to me, (2) I want them to know I'm insured and that they are getting paid, and (3) I want my wife to be contacted ASAP and she does too. I keep this around my neck because that's where I know they'll look and there's no guarantee anybody will ever see my seatbag again.

Married about a year and a half. She is coming around. I do have approval to build a new bike. Now to decide on which one....

She understands most of the time, until she sees two blue PBK bags within a week or two on the porch. Then she questions whether I should be buying bike stuff or roses......

Back to the topic, I have been thinking about getting a road ID, but how is this different than just carrying your D/L in your jersey? I also have my phone on me with an ICE number.

I have been married for longer than most on this site have been alive.

The deal conwife and I came up with decades ago "I can have as many motorcycles and bikes as I can afford; but, no affairs" Works for me

D/L has no contact numbers and will be in the bag of clothes that they cut off you, waiting until someone realizes there are pockets in cycling jerseys that they should search. Phones can break, get lost, etc. (Or in my case have a security lock on them.). (On the subject, my $.02 for dog tags is that the chains are on are designed to break easily, which is one reason we wrote blood type and allergies on our T-shirts, if you put them on another chain, or para cord, etc. you run a choking risk.)

Nothing is perfect, but in my mind the Road-ID comes closer than many other solutions.

Things can fall out of pockets during a nasty crash. On top of that, my DL doesn't contain my wife's phone # or my blood type. The plus about having it around your neck is that one of the first things EMTs do with an unconscious person is cut their shirt off.

I have something like that. I don't have any affairs and she doesn't divorce me.

If the person is injured badly enough to be unable to communicate, you can bet no EMT is going to sit around looking through bags and what not to find info. I check for a wallet in the pocket and thats it. If it isn't there, I let the cops take care of it.
