Why does the Cervelo S2 cost more than a P2 (tt-bike)?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Why does the Cervelo S2 cost more than a P2 (tt-bike)?

Just wondering why the Cervelo S2 road-specific bike costs way more than the TT-specific P2C. I would have guessed that a TT-bike would require more aero and thus more pricing for the sculpting, but the S2-ultegra costs over $1000 more than a P2C-ultegra. Both are carbon, and I'm assuming both share similar aero engineering.

The other $200 difference is probably from the difference between STI shifters and aero levers/shifters.

The difference in the the price of the framesets is about $800 based on Excel Sports prices: https://www.excelsports.com/new.asp?p...ajor=1&minor=1

I anything, you'd think the P2C would cost more than the S2 because the P2C comes with a seatpost. But it's not the case.

The price is based on the perceived demand in order to maximize profit. For the most part, the price to the consumer for most products is independent of the cost of manufacturing.

Ok, so if we just focus on the frameset, what accounts for that $800 difference? They're both carbon, and both share similar aero engineering. Sure, the fit is somewhat different from road vs TT, but that shouldn't alone cost that much. Is there a different type of carbon being used?

It's probably because they can sell a lot more S2 than they can P2. Not a lot of people drop big money on a TT frameset, but they do on a nice road frameset.

You may be right about demand. Still, the P2 is probably the most popular racing tribike out there.

Do other brands do this sort of pricing where TT bikes < road bikes? I always thought TT bikes would cost more due to the increased aero technology.

Hard to say - I went to the Felt website to see if their pricing model was similar to Cervelo but they don't list the price of the frameset alone, so it's difficult to do an apples-to-apples comparison.

I imagine that Cervelo keeps the price of the P2C low to prevent any kind of cannibalism from hurting the sales of their flagship P3C and P4 models. Of course, only the people at Cervelo know for sure...

There could be 100 different reasons for that. Especially since they don't have actual numbers, and because they're only showing complete bikes, not framesets.

How many people do you know with a $2k+ road frameset? Probably a few, right? How many do you know with a $2k+ TT frameset?

Maybe my views are heavily distorted because so many triathletes are buying P2s and I don't really know many of them.

Pricing has little to do with cost of production and mostly to do with supply and demand. Think $100 pair of jeans where the cost of production is about $5.

Perhaps the S2 is a Giffen good.

It may vary in different parts of the country but there are far, far more triathletes than cyclists in this neck of the woods. I was just reading an article that said that tri was the fastest growing sport.

There are a couple of triathlons within driving distance just about every weekend.

Is the S2 more difficult and costly to make? There's huge weight difference between the two.
