Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Who makes a 90/0 degree road stem?

I'd like to lower the position on my new Felt slightly and the short head tube is making the typical 6 degree stem drop just a bit more than I'd like.

Searching online the only 90/0 degree OS road stem I can find is the Easton EA90. Does anyone know if there are any other options?

thanks - spence

I have a 0 deg stem, but I wouldn't get one in most cases. Have you tried flipping the stem up? Can you flip it up, move the spacers around, or a combination of the two?

If I had a 0 deg stem, I would keep posting pictures of my bike and laughing while everyone kept telling me to flip it. "OK, I flipped it, does this look better?" "FLIP IT!" "OK, how about now?"

the manufacturers don't make many 0-degree stems since the whole point in 6~8deg stems is so you can play around with the spacers.

that being said, if the steerer tube was cut too short... sucks.

When I bought my first bike getting back into cycling 4 years ago, I posted pics of it including the 90 degree QUILL stem and still got someone telling me to flip it.

I have a Salsa SUL stem that's 90 degrees (bought from harriscyclery), and I believe Soma(somafab.com) has one, too.

edit - my mistake, the soma stems are +/- 7 degrees.

I just got a salsa 90cm 90 degree last weekend at the LBS. It was all they had in a 90cm and I wanted to try out a shorter stem. No flippie.

Yea, the Thompson looks like the only other option I've seen.

The bike came with only a single spacer above the cone which puts a +/- 6 degree stem just a bit lower than I'd like for right now. Flipped down it's only 4" of drop, but as I'm getting back into riding I need to work on my fitness first...otherwise I like how the bike fits.

The better option may be to just ride up until I'm a bit stronger.

Clearly they don't make many for a reason...

thanks - spence

have you also considered 82 and 80 degree stems? (aka plus/- 8 and 10). I have a Deda Newton Zero100 which is 82 on one bike and a 80 Oval stem on another--get's you a little flatter than a 6.

The OP said a +/- 6 is too high and too low. An 8 or 10 would only make that worse.

Check out Specialized's stems -- most of their models have shims to change the angle in 2-degree increments.

https://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/...dStems&eid=367
https://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/...jsp?spid=41848

*edit* Hmm.. maybe not, actually. This one says "12° stem: 10 position angle range, +/- 8° to +/- 16°, in 2° increments", which I think really means that you can have it anywhere between 8 and 16 degrees, but it's not going to give you anything straighter than 8 in either direction.

You say that it's got just one spacer now, but you also mentioned a "cone" -- is it an additional cone on top of the frame? I'm wondering if it's something like this:

Ahhhh, so that's what that is

I'll be honest, this is my first bike with a threadless headset. I just assumed the cone was part of this unit and not just adding space.

It's probably worth noting the bike is a Felt T23 and I believe has a little funky geometry. Very similar to the Felt F series frame (i.e. long TT and 74deg HA) but the head tube measures to 170mm which I believe is short for a 60cm bike. Assuming I'm measuring things correctly...

Yes, it was an opportunistic purchase, but like I said so far I'm very happy with how it fits and the overall ride. Just need to get the bar position right...

thanks - spence
