Dura Ace question.....

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The only time you need to worry about Dura Ace/Ultegra compatibility is when you are working with 8 speed systems. 8 Speed Dura Ace shifters will not work with 8 speed Ultegra derailleurs. The reverse it true also: you can't use 8 speed Dura Ace derailleurs with 8 speed Ultegra shifters. Otherwise there are no compatibility issues. As far as I know Dura Ace and Ultegra 10 speed systems are completely interchangeable too, although I don't have a bike with 10 speed Dura Ace to try this out on....yet. (I'm hoping Santa brings me one this year, I've been very, very good.)

If anyone knows otherwise, please correct me. I'd like to know.

Yeah, I've got 10 speed shifters with 9-speed derailleurs and crank - no problem. Shimano says they don't recommend the crank with a 10-speed chain because the space between the two rings is too big or some BS... work fine last long time, never dropped a chain with that setup.

+1 I'm using 9 sp Ultegra chainrings with 10 sp Rival with no problems. For all practical purposes, 9 sp and 10 sp chainrings are the same. Some are even sold as 9/10 sp.

If you're confused, visit Sheldon Brown's site. He explains it pretty well.

I've got 7800 (10 speed) dura ace shifters with ultegra derailers. They work just fine.

I went to a new shop that was recommended to me and he said that the new Dura-Ace brifters and My 10 speed Ultegra derailers were not interchangeable. True?

Maybe the 7900 is not compatible with it, but 7800 is compatible with 6600... I'm using it myself.
