Specialized paint finish question.

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Specialized paint finish question.

About to get my first real road bike. Earlier was thinking of a 2008 closeout Specializes Roubaix or the new Secteur model (replaces Sequoia) but now I have been leaning toward a new Roubaix Compact. However, when I got to see the 2010 model I was a little surprised to see it only came in a matte black finish. I really like the bike except for that paint finish, which I know over time is bound to wear quicker than a gloss finish. Small scratches would probably be more noticeable too. Why Specialized is using these matte finishes on their bikes I am not quite sure (other than to look different than every other road bike). Am I being a little to obsessive about this? I guess the reason I ask is because this is a big investment for me and something I am likely to keep for years. I would just appreciate your'all's perspectives.

It's a tool not a jewel...stop obsessing and ride your bike, it's gonna get scratches on it.

I have a tarmac with a gloss finish. Like it. To be honest I love the sl2 in Matte finish? It still has a clear coat on it right? Should be fine.

Ya think? I was thinking just the opposite.

Doesn't matter what I think though. It's your bike. If you don't like the color, I think that's a good enough reason to look for something else. There's lots of bikes out there.

I doubt it. I was under the impression that matt finishes and clear coats don't go together. That might even be a reason why they do that - to eliminate a painting step.

My R1150GS Adventure has a flat clear coat finish. And has held up very well.
