knee pain

I recently rode up Mt. Mitchell, and afterwards noticed some knee pain on the front of my knees. I've never experienced this before, and was wondering if it was probably due to all of the climbing. Or poor fore/aft positioning of my saddle?

That, or possibly seat height or pushing too high a gear? Did you get enough hill training in before attempting this climb?

What was your average cadence during the climbing part of the ride?
Do your pedals allow enough float?
If your cadence was low (<70) you may have pushed too hard and put too much pressure on your knees.
Float allows you to change your foot/leg/knee angle to relieve much of the stress you put on the knees.

In general, knee pain on the front indicates your saddle is too low and pain behind the knee means your saddle is too high.

Googling “knee pain cycling” came up with http://www.cptips.com/knee.htm and several other sites.
