Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Can I say I did a metric century

Did a group ride and my computer showed 61.75 miles. Another in the group said 62.1. I did a quick warm up and took some time to restart after rest stops. It was + 100 road temp here in SW FL.

Go do a quick ride around the block, and you'll have completed a metric.

If you have calibrated your speedometer for your actual tire size, then figure it's "accurate" and the other guy is off. Otherwise, go to mapmyride, put in the ride there, and see what it says.

I've been known to ride to the ride or ride around the parking lot while waiting, and either could have run the other guy's milage up just a tad.

Am I allowed to multiply my mileage by 1.61 so I can do centuries without the hassle of riding so far?

I'm now cutting my rides off at 61 miles, or in many cases, ending somewhere after 100 miles just to avoid association with the term 'Metric' century.

We've covered this before.

There is no such thing as a "metric" century.

There is the 100 km ride, which is a "century".

And for historical reasons, there is a 161 km ride called the "Imperial century".

For the full effect, "Imperial centuries" should be ridden on penny-farthings while wearing a tweed cape.

I don't agree.

100km = "a metric"

100 miles = "a century"

+1

And I'm a Canadian/Australian submerged in the metric system.

Also ...

200 km = "a double metric"

200 miles = "a double century"

100 miles on one day and 100 miles on the next day = "back to back centuries"

300 km = "a triple metric"

300 miles = "a triple century"

And so on.

You're sounding a bit grouchy there ... have you been unable to ride lately as well? If I had anything remotely like energy, I'd probably be grouchy too.

I never get this Century S***. My club's training ride yesterday was 110.5 miles (according to my Garmin) in a total ride time of 5:15:23. To us it was just another ride through the North Shore of LI, and not much else.
