Pcad: The Bee's Knee(s)
I'm thinking that pcad’s knee is still on the fritz, but haven't seen a recent update. Perhaps this post will spawn one.
Of course we all truly wish him well. Lying in that transitory stage between middle-age and the near-elderly, perhaps he hasn’t made that connection yet that things ain’t like they used to be, but are better than they will be later. Having more than 8 years on him in that regard, I thought I might provide a glimpse of what lies ahead.
It only gets worse.
Aging pro athletes in every sport say that as the years pile on, it takes longer to warm up and longer to heal. And at some point it never warms up and never heals. Jesting aside, I seriously don’t want pcad to be there with his knee this time.
So some advice from a former runner and cross-country and track coach: There’s no overuse injury in running (and cycling, probably) that time off won’t heal. Having said that, no one ever follows it and we all come back too soon. But even so, at your advancing age, coming back better be gently. No HTFU – STFD instead.
And the real question, pcad: Will that Cervelo take a triple?
Side note: I noticed a crack in the head tube of my Roubaix Elite (lower end model). Specialized sent a complete Roubaix Pro frameset as a (free) replacement. Heck, that frameset cost more than my whole bike! After swapping parts this week at the LBS, I’m pretty sure I will have America’s only Roubaix Pro with a triple crank and 30-year-old leather saddle.
Just showing you the way, brother pcad.

I missed that PCad was hurting. Maybe I shouldn't have called him Mr. Borgnine in Foo.
Feel better soon.

Thanks boys.
Right knee update: first Synvisc injection was about 9 days ago, second was last Tuesday, last one is scheduled for this coming Thursday, that's 3 injections over two weeks. Knee felt 60-80% better after the first shot, it varies, still some tightness under the kneecap, pain walking up and down stairs, some on the bike. But generally it's putting up with rather strenuous cycling (75 reasonably hard miles today, including 20+ @ race pace and a fair bit of climbing). I'm hoping it keeps me going for the next 10+ years. It can do that for patients who have some cartilage left (I do) and who respond well to the drug (I do).
Considering the fact that Synvisc isn't supposed to really make your knee feel better until a month after the last injection, my positive results right away are very encouraging. After my ride Thursday my knee felt pretty bad. Friday AM it felt fine, after a 50 miler Friday it felt almost normal, same thing today. It seems to be improving daily. That's how it is supposed to work.
I ride with one guy who's still hammering with us @ age 61. Can I do this for another ten years? I should live so long. I worry about today. Today it felt pretty good.
More miles in the rain tomorrow. I hope I can keep riding and riding hard. It really does make me happy. And I don't know why.

Pcad, you evil evil man. You've made me aware that it's going to rain tomorrow. I was all content to wake up and go riding expecting the weather to be good, and your weather reports have ruined it all for me!

I recently rode with a couple of 70+ guys. I couldn't keep up with the 70 year old, and the 71 year old looked 50 and was riding a Madone 5.2 like he stole it. You'll be fine. If not, just think, you could pioneer the first Cervelo recumbent!

At this rate all of BF will be dead to me.
That works. I don't need any of you idiots. Do I?

Pcad, slowly back away from the keyboard, and go lie down. I think the Synvisc is eating away at your brain.

Correction: I'm from NYC (born and raised), I just happen to live in Union (a lovely blue collar town, really). And this from someone in Chester! I've been there; I'm not impressed.

1st pic: FTW
2nd pic: Is that the Motobecane Fly Ti? It can outrun bears?!
You're also minutes away from the Woodbury Commons so you have that going for you...which is nice.

Very nice. I have to periodically remind myself that outside of the NYC toilet, NY/NJ has some very nice places.
