side by side comparison compact/triple
Anyone know of a link on the internet that shows a side by side comparison of a compact and a triple crankset? I'm curious as to which combinations are equivalent and which gears one loses completely when going with a compact. I realize that there are different types of cassettes as well as cranksets.. I currently run a 50/39/30 with a 12/27 in the back. Most of what I have been testing lately are 50/34s with similar cassettes..

I just took my wife off a 52-42-30 with 12x25 cassette to a 50-34 compact with 13-29 cassette and she loves it. None of the BS dealing with a triple and all the gearing overlaps, and she gets the same low gear. Of course she also went from Tiagra to Campagnolo Centaur, and loves that too.

30x27 - this is the one you loose
30x24 ~ 34x27
30x21 ~ 34x24 ~ 39x27
30x19 ~ 34x21 ~ 39x24
I got this from the usual www.sheldonbrown.com/gears, and can vouch that this translated to real world climbs.

Use the equivalent gear formula to compare. For example: 27/30 x 34 = 30.6. This tells you that a 30/27 low gear on a triple is closest to a 34/31.
24/30 x 34 = 27.2
21/30 x 34 = 23.8
If don't want to lose top gearing, you need a cassette that starts with an 11 instead of a 12.

plug in ALL the cogs from both triple, compact and cassette
for a road triple, that is most likely 30-39-53, 30-39-50 or 30-42-52
for compacts it's 34-50, or 36-50
it will give you all gear combinations possible from lowest to highest.

seems to me..an 11-28 cassette would minimize the loss of the 30/27 gear even more...34/27 would be 30.85 gear inches and 34/28 would be 29.75
