I'm not aware of any "turning on the GPS feature" having an ill effect on my battery. If I leave it running and use it as my primary computer on my handlebars, display constantly running, then yeah, it's going to suck a battery dry in no time. But on sleep mode, tucked away in a jersey pocket or in a seat bag, almost no battery is used and the mapmyride program can still record data just fine.
It's a cheap option for simple route mapping if you already have a computer you're happy with on your handlebars. I think it's a great backup to map routes, but for the previously mentioned reasons, you need to drop the coin on a Garmin if you want to use a GPS display as your primary. |

Took it out of my pocket when I got home and it never missed a beat. Bummer, was looking for an excuse to upgrade (it's an original edge unit)
now that they opened up the blutooth a bit with OS3 I hope someone comes out with a complete package with software an a cadence/speed sensor that works with it Any developers that are cyclists? lol... |
I use mt ATT tilt with everytrail. When there is a LOT of tree cover you could get a weird reading. But other then that i leave it on for the ride and upload from the phone. Go online and they show a map with all info. Can even take pics along the way and it will place it in the correct location on your ride. It a great tool, track you rides and have a phone with you. I get about 4.5 hours with a fresh battery when im mapping with gps on. I still use my cycle computer for viewing speed and so on. The phone just stays in my back pocket or like this mtb ride it goes in the camelback. http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=385430 There is a app for the iphone and like mine windows mobile. If you are using a phone i recommend a aquapac, keeps everything dry.
