Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

newbie questions...

I just purchased my first road bike, a cannondale synapse 5 with alloy frame.

My question is about inner tubes for the tires... I know that the tires on my bike are 700x23c and have a presta valve, but what size presta valve? Also is it a good idea to buy unisize inner tubes or would it be better to buy specific sized tubes?

That's all for now, I'm sure that I'll have more later.

All presta valves are the same diameter, so your pump will fit any of them. Some tubes have longer stems, made for aerodynamic rims, which have a deeper section. In theory they're interchangeable, but the long stems look funny sticking out of a normal rim, and when i've used them once or twice in emergencies, it's been hard to pump up the tires with my frame-fit pump without ripping the stems from the tube. Unless you need the long ones, by the normal ones.
Some people insist you have to match tube size to tire size, but I haven't worried about it in years. All our family road bikes, with tires from 23mm to 41mm, are running 25mm tubes. All the mountain bikes, 1.4 to 2.3, use 26x1.5 tubes. It simplifies things, and it's never caused any problems.

Lol, that's what you think!!

Next tube related question is going to be "latex or butyl?"

Or "Continental vs Performance vs Michelin?"

Then "regular vs light vs SUPER light" on above choices

Then there's the never ending "smooth vs threaded stem" dilemma.

yeah, but I've found enough info on the web for me to develop my own opinions on those things, it was really just the sizing issues that I was concerned with, everything else seems like a matter of speculation and experimentation.
