how to put on clip ons?

I bought some clip on aero bars and was wondering if there is a certain way to put them on. Are they supposed to go under the tape? They dont fit over it. If so, how am I supposed to do re tape it? Thanks!

Lol

You shouldn't have your tape all the way to the stem. The bars go near the stem, in the place you didn't tape. There should just be enough tape that there is a place for your hands on the tops, you don't need tape all the way to the stem.

they go directly on the bars, the tape should stop before the point where the aerobars clamp; make sure to torque aerboars to the correct setting in the manual to avoid problems later (especially if they are carbon)

I just think clip-on aero bars are silly. Because if you're going to use them and use them correctly, get different seat post, different seat(your ass will hurt), and enjoy the nerdy look. Honestly, just ride in the drops or put your for-arms on the bars. Same effect as clip-ons, just without the weight, price, and look.

Wrong. But thanks for playing.

Haha, you one of those guys that rides with some gnarly aero-bars? Because if you're not Time trialing or doing triathlons... ditch em. Yes, riding in the drops has the same effect as clip-ons(not a legit TT bike CLIP-ONS)... sorry I didn't mention that you can't rest your upper body on your elbows, but thats lazy anyways.

Flatballer 08-16-09 07:28 PM

No, I put them on for TTs. I have trouble controlling my bike with the imaginary aero bars.

Rest your fore-arms and grab the brifters lol.

Ill take another look at it when I get home. I have the kind that makes an "arch" for the handles. I think the clip on's were spread out too far so it was on the tape. I bought these things a while ago. I will check and post to let you guys know. Thanks alot for the help!

If you put your hands on the shifters that kind of defeats the entire purpose of reducing your frontal area. But whatever. Some of us have time trials to do and can't afford a dedicated TT bike yet.

Right, because two knuckles equals the size of your torso.

Flatballer 08-16-09 07:38 PM

You realize your entire arm is now splayed out? I don't even think my arms bend like you're describing, but if you're too badass for aero bars, by all means, keep being badass. Maybe someday I'll be so cool as you.

Misleading title alert...LOL

It sounds like you have an old school kind like these

or these

Those clip much further out on the handlebar so you have to take away some of the bar tape. You also can't effectively use the tops once those are on, unless you don't mind grabbing onto the arm rests.
