Upgrading trek 1000 to compact crankset
I have a 2007 trek 1000 with a triple, and I am tired of all the shifting issues. So far I have upgraded the wheels to neuvation wheels but have left everything else unchanged.
i was considering buying a SRAM Rival compact groupset for 650 dollars and having my LBS install it. Does that sounds like a silly idea considering the whole original bike cost that amount?
I was originally hoping to buy a used 105 groupset or something similar but it seems those work out to be betweeh 400 and 500 dollars anyway, so i thought that it doesn't make much sense to buy that instead of a brand new rival groupset.

Why do you want a whole groupset ? You start off saying you want to swap the triple for a compact ... made sense up to that point.

To get a compact crankset, I'll have to get the left shifter at the very least. Also, aren't new cranksets made to work with thinner chains and cassettes with more gears?
I thought that the only thing that I really don't need is brakes but my brakes really suck so I might as well change those too.
Is there a simple way I could just change the crankset and have this work?

It's a 2007 - it's not 10 speed?
That bike comes with Sora stuff, right? No idea if you can make that triple shifter act like a double, but maybe?
Seems like FD and crankset at a minimum. Shifter change probably required. How worn is your chain and cassette?

With Shimano triple shifters the cable throw for the middle and outer rings is the same it is for a double. So you can use the triple shifter on a double, just start with the shifter in the middle position.

Might be helpful to list what model components you have.

You've probably thought of this, but why not just sell your bike and buy a new Trek 2.1 (or something comparable)? You'd have your compact and all new stuff for about the same $$ as upgrading your current bike.
