Racer Dies in Texas

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Racer Dies in Texas

Kevin Underhill was taken off life support after crashing at a weekly crit in Austin. From what I know, he was fairly new to racing and touched a wheel and faceplanted which caused severe brain injury. He was also an accomplished rock climber. Link to story is below, I guess it's not only cars that can be dangerous. This is the first I've heard of a CAT racer actually dying and it def. freaks me out a bit. RIP Kev.

Unfortunately, it's not the first I've heard. Horrible stuff. RIP and condolences to the family.

Very said, and unfortunately not the first I've heard. But what's with the "CAT racer" stuff?

I meant that as not a professional or a cyclist out for a training ride. He was racing, it was a awkward sentence

On BF, how you make reference to someone who races is apparently more important than the fact that they tragically died doing it.

Wouldn't he rather be remembered as a racer than a guy that died tragically?

my condolences.

I don't think he was connoting that racing is more important as much as describing the scenario under which this tragedy took place.

Is it possible to have a single thread on BF that doesn't have bickering?

A man died. That's what is important here. We should pay our respects, and that's it.

I said it in the other thread, RIP, and my condolences to his friends and family.

I've just suddenly started seeing people say "CAT racer" a bunch and it seems strange to me.

A couple of guys were talking about this crash Saturday morning before our ride. At that point he was in the ICU but his condition wasn't known. The ER docs at that hospital saved my daughter's life several years ago after a large hemorrhage so I'd like to believe he got the best possible care.

yeah. I used to race cats, but the fuel bills got WAY high, and you can't really make the danged things go very fast at all.

On a more serious note, I regret the death of the racer, although our sport is dangerous, and you can die doing it...without help from a car.

I was riding with a friend on a group ride Sunday. He was in that race, basically right next to Kevin when he crashed. It was my friend's first criterium race too. He was concerned Sunday b/c he hadn't heard any outcome from the hospital. I read the awful news yesterday.

RIP and condolences to the family.
