Matte Black Frames
So I've been thinking about getting my ali road-bike frame powder-coated for a while now (going for the "stealthy" look with no decals/logos/glossy bits, just a matte-black finish) and I was wondering if anyone has any good pics of similar frames?
It looks awesome in my head, but I wonder if the reality of it is less thrilling... Would it be easy to "knock up" in Photoshop? Cheers! |
I had my old steel frame powder-coated flat black just this year. I like it mighty fine. I have a pic in my phone but I'm not vey tech-savvy, I could email it to someone who can post it.

Although mine is not without graphics it is matte. It is a Curtlo S3 steel frame which was first powdercoated matte black. Then the graphics were painted through digitally generated stencils. After the graphics were painted the whole frame was sprayed with a wet matte coating.
It is being built up and I should have the finished bike in a couple weeks. Hope this helps. Ride safe |
The Neo Exile frames are in matte black..

Exile is more of a semi-gloss actually, but just barely.
It looks great. I see flat black fixies all the time, they look very nice. If you do a search for 'stealth', there are some threads about stealth bikes that should have flat black bikes in em. |
If we're just showing any matte black frame, here's mine, but I think the OP was looking for powder coated coverup's

Powder coating is not suitable for some heat treated Alu bikes because the powder oven gets up to or over 400 deg. Check with the bike manufacturer about it first.

Check out the 2010 Specialized road bikes. The Allez and Roubaix models have matte black versions, e.g. http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/...45823&eid=4352

No Name - No Slogan
I say go for it. That's what I did. |
if a person were to get their frame sprayed flat back would it be easy enough to stencil a logo back onto it?

Thanks all - they look fantastic! I wonder how they would look with a non-painted carbon fork? Or can you get carbon forks painted in matte black?
Love the anodized red seatpost clamp on that Neo - would look ace with matching headset... |
Is it hard to keep matte finish frames clean? Assuming you can't really wax them... do they pick up stains that are tough to remove?

I did exactly what you're talking about and I love it. My fork is glossy woven carbon and it doesn't look out of place. You can get them painted, but it costs a lot, as you can't powdercoat carbon. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3578/...b96ebf8489.jpg |

I like the look a lot. My bike is just raw carbon, no paint and I think it looks good.

I just scored this old Centurion (frame only) for just over a hundred bucks.
I was thinking or painting it, but the stealthy look of the matte black has grown on me. You can photoshop the stickers off if you want :thumb: http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/l...nturiontwo.jpg |
Thanks for all the photos guys. I would like to see a Kuota Kredo re-done in a flat clear-coat. I just bought a used Kredo and the stock clear-coat is falling off all over the place. I got it for a real deal and am looking at clear-coat options. Trying to decide between gloss or matte. I am leaning now toward matte. The kredo frame is just georgous. I, however, would like to keep all the stock stickers and such but the painter said it is difficult to keep them on and take off just the old clear-coat, so it would cost a bit more. Still undecided really. Today I completely stripped the bike down to frame. Looking forward to making her beautiful again.
Funny thing, a couple months ago I gave a guy shi* for getting a flat black bike, and now here I am going the same direction... Sorry guy! |

Always seems to me the non-gloss would less aero. More importantly every little ding and smug turn into glaring marks
