Shimano Dura Ace Di2. Really? Crime against the earth. Please be GREEN

Its a shame that there are advocates for electric groupsets for bicycles. Is Laziness, and or the need for consumerism so high that one needs to find yet another source to use energy on a planet having an energy crisis?
Sure it costs cents to recharge your fancy electric groupset, but multiply that by the number of times you recharge it, then multiply that by millions of people who will eventually have it.

A cable uses energy from your fingers, thats not good enough for you. You need to use your fingers, but find some way to burden the earths resources in addition, for WHAT???
Absolutely, disgustingly revolting.

What is it, that people cant see is insanely wrong with this? Am i the only one?
- So you can change your gears just fine as it is with cables.
- Bikes are so light that they even have rules to make them heavier than its possible to make them easily, so its not about weight.

Its just a NEED TO WASTE ENERGY.

Please dont buy Di2. We need to save the earth, and wasting energy in this way is just spitting at our grandchildren

Oh Howzit, how I enjoy your posts. Your griefing is so finely honed and precisely targeted, its carnage is quite the sight to behold. <3

Moffetts 08-22-09 12:35 AM

Not at all, troll.

Sonoma76 08-22-09 12:37 AM

oh please.

I live a green lifestyle but this is just nitpicking. You can recycle the batteries, for one, and for two, there's a whole lot more waste, energy, and resources poured into making that fancy carbon frame than there are building some simple electronics and servo motors.

Carbon fiber is difficult to make...it's hard to recycle...it doesn't last a long time compared with metal options, and it uses resins, glues, plastics and other materials that can be toxic and will undoubtedly someday end up in a Chinese landfill being picked through by a poor 8 year old.

If you want a true "green" bike, you've got one option: craigslist. Because if you're buying new you're not reusing!

Sommando 08-22-09 12:37 AM

pot meet kettle? Your posts take up a lot of people's energy, and it all seems to be wasted too...

Sonoma76 08-22-09 12:38 AM

errr was this post satire? If so, I've been had. Good show sir.

mustang1 08-22-09 12:42 AM

Sometime in the future they might make electronic-everything on a bike (I have nothing against this) as long as they leave anythng that generates forward motion as a human-powered mechanical device, it's fine.

I like Scott CR1. But did you buy it brand new?

jasyn 08-22-09 12:43 AM

Seriously?

Puffyg 08-22-09 12:48 AM

Like allot of other things on this planet, if you don't like it then don't use it. Good rant though!

Battery manufacturing is quite the dirty industry. Plus you wouldn't want to have your battery burst and burn your bike down like many a Dell laptop.

I AM the only one who sees this?

Mankind is doomed.

What is wrong with shifting a cable? One just needs to find a way to add use of earths energy otherwise riding is not fun? Otherwise there is agonizing, nerve-wrenching distress on how else to waste energy?

celticfrost 08-22-09 01:21 AM

I'm holding out on buying a new groupset until they build one that runs on the fat of clubbed baby seals.

No, not at all. We're all doomed because nobody is willing to give up this lifestyle. Oh well, I guess. We're all really truly f***ed. I still live green but don't have any illusions that it makes a big difference compared with 95% of the rest of you freds, poseurs and wannabes out there buying and throwing away and not recycling and pouring your used motor oil down the throats of baby penguins.

youcoming 08-22-09 02:30 AM

So if Campy comes out with an electronic super record 11 you'll have to switch to Sram Red, hahahahahah

abstractform20 08-22-09 02:37 AM

i ride a chariot of fire...of course the fire is coal-powered and the wheels are made of blood diamonds.
every day i ride over freshly cut amazonian timber.

take that.

rooftest 08-22-09 03:05 AM

Why do you hate America so much?

HarryStoddard 08-22-09 03:13 AM

I have a carbon footprint equal to someone in a third world country. GIVE ME MY Di2!

Computers are not environmentally friendly, yet your typing from one.

I'm trying to increase my carbon footprint.

invasionusa 08-22-09 03:30 AM

Don't forget to toss in a few old tires. They will really light up the yard.

Cyclist0383 08-22-09 03:35 AM

Try the 'Car Free' forum; they actually might take you seriously.

If you do buy a Di2, probably should get a spare battery.

kwrides 08-22-09 04:29 AM

Come on, we all know the only way to keep a Shimano group from going out of true or dropping chains is by adding a robot to the bike!
