Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Bike Coming - Ultegra SL vs new 6700?

Due to delays with his welder, my custom titanium bike is not yet complete. When I ordered it several months ago, I had asked for Ultegra SL...but now the new Ultegra 6700 is out. I suspect I could get the newer group (although I would probably have to pay about $200-$300usa more for it)...but am inclined to actually stick with "old" SL.

I am interested in hearing input/feedback from the BF collective, especially if anyone has actually seen/used the new 6700 group, on the pros/cons of Ultegra SL versus 6700.

BTW I really don't care that the shifter cables are not under the bar with Ultegra SL, so if that is the only "advantage" of 6700 why bother??

Doug

PS If your only comment is "campy ftw" or "SRAM ftw" no need to post...I know these brands each have their strengths, and for better or worse the choice here is between Ultegra SL and 6700.

I think the new Ultegra 6700 shifters look like they'd be more comfortable than SL, but I hate the look of the 6700 crank. I'm not sure if I hate the crank more than SL's silly shift cables or not. Obviously SRAM is the way to go, but if you're stuck on Shimano I don't know that it's worth $200-300 to upgrade to 6700 from Ultegra SL.

I have ultegra sl. I have used dura ace 7800 in the past and I cannot tell a difference between the two.

A lot of people seem to think that dura ace 7900 is not much of an improvement on 7800. If true, you can infer what that would mean for the new ultegra.

Adjustable reach sounds good as I have small hands.

Weight saving is always good.

But I love that iced grey look.

If the mechanics are the same and you can benefit from adjustable reach/more hand comfort...then the extra expense is negligible. If you can afford a custom bike, get what fits and works the best for you.

Good point....although I can barely afford the custom bike, my current bike is 24 years old (with original Dura-Ace 7400 6 speed group!) so I am overdue for a 21st century ride....I have a wacko body with long legs and short torso so can't fit a "stock" frame.

Also the builder is charging "only" 2K for a custom straight-gauge titanium frame with carbon fork.

Still inclined to get the SL but appreciate the comments!

Get the Sl but ask for a discount since it's going on clearance.

Good idea, I am also going to ask for a discount on the frame since I have been waiting for it since MARCH !(was supposed to be ready in April). But that is the deal with hand-crafted frames from boutique framemakers, I suppose.

The 6700's under-bar-tape cable-mounting gives me a bike-stiffie.

if you want wide gearing options, go with the 6700, which can support 11-28t
