Friction Brifters?

So, I recently ordered up a 2010 CAAD9-5 from my LBS. My previous bike is a 1989 Novara Corsa. It is designed for light touring and is setup with a drop bar and down tube shifters. I'm really looking forward to the switch to brifters for the rear, but I can't stand the way they work for the front chainrings. My current setup (novara) is indexed for the rear (thank god), but is friction in front for three chainrings. This can be a bit of a pain since there are three rings, but it's completely adjustable and I never have to worry about chain rub or any mis-alignment.

My ultimate question is this: Does anyone make a friction brifter? I'm so use to friction on three rings that friction on two would be a dream! I know that there are micro adjustments that can be made on the 105 brifters, but something about the shift action just really annoys me.

Campy is like the in between.

It has 6+ clicks (depending on year) for the full range of FD motion. So you can trim.

I don't believe anybody makes friction shift/brake levers, but like uspspro said, Campy has a ton of indexing on the front shifter and you can move the derailleur into several different positions to allow you to trim pretty closely according to your chainline.

I think the Modolo Morphus shifters had a friction option.

Before deciding on the CAAD9, I test rode a ton of bikes. I've been off the bike for over 10 years and am just now getting back into it. So, I tried out Shimano, SRAM, and Campy to see which would work best for me. I could never get the hang of SRAM, I always wanted to move the brake lever to shift and kept getting mad when it wouldn't move. The thumb levers on Campy threw me off too. I absolutely love the way the brake hoods feel and the fact that they route their cables under the hoods though. Shimano functionally just works well for me.

I think my annoyance with all the brifters is when you are going from the large ring to the small. When shift lever suddenly slacks the cable and you get that "pop" noise. Some setups are louder than others but it's always there. My friction shifter is absolutely silent as the cable is always under tension.

I know that I could go with a bar end shifter, but I really don't want to worry about smacking my knee against that thing.

Rather than focus on the "trim" available with friction shifters, you may be better off learning how to adjust a front derailer.

I think they have brazed-on cable stops, but you could use Kelly Take Offs.

You could use a bar-end shifter for the front.

Edit: Oops, missed your comment above. That is still probably the better option, though.

Those Kelly Take Offs definitely look like a possibility. While researching them I also came across something from Paul Components called Thumbies. This also might have possibilities

rooftest and Flatballer, I think you may be misunderstanding my issue. It's not that the FD is not adjusted correctly or that there is any issue with the shifting. It's with the idea of indexed shifting for two gears. It's really just a preference thing. If I'm dealing with two gears I essentially have an off and on position. If the shifter is holding the cable under constant tension then switching between these two positions is smooth and silent. Current brifters hold the cable under tension, but when you go from the large ring to the small, they let go of the cable (essentially) and allow the FD to snap to the position that is needed to move the chain. This is noisy and really no faster than the old method. I like my bike to be silent. I understand that this may be a foreign concept to some and that's okay.

I think I might be giving those a shot unless someone has another idea. No hurry as my bike won't be delivered until the last week in September.

Warning: road and mtb handlebars have different diameters, so shifters for MTB bars won't fit road bars.


IMO, learn how your shifters trim and just ride your bike.

Also, the original Grip Shift was for drop handlebars (late 80's). I presume these are friction on the FD - good luck finding them.
