Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Clarksville, TN Sunrise Century -- Anyone riding?

Tomorrow is the Clarksville Sunrise Century. A couple dozen riders did this century in between 3:44 and 3:45 last year. Fast, easy course.

Is anyone else here riding tomorrow? Are you doing the Elite Peloton?

(For the record, I'm not doing the Elite Peloton, but I would like to find a group that wants to set personal bests in the regular peloton for the century.)

I will be there. I will be trying to set a personal best for myself. I'm aiming at 5:20 to 5:25 riding time with 6 hours or under total (for some water refills and potty breaks and such). Not sure if I will make that or not. That sounds maybe slower than you are looking for. If I find some opportune groups along the way that are around my pace I'll probably try to hook on though. I'll probably try to hang with the regular peleton or remnants thereof as long as possible though without going out too hard.

I'm going to try to finish in 5 hours or less total time -- I'm a geezer. We'll see what happens.

Two friends of mine are going for a time similar to yours.

5 hours total time is a future goal for me. I'm not there yet.

Good luck!

4:44:22 total time. I think I could have broken 4:30 if I had drank a lot more in the first twenty miles. Starting about mile 55, I had severe cramping in my thighs and had to stop twice. My group did the first 50 miles in 2:10.

Great ride.

We were about 6 minutes behind you at 50 miles. I really died the last 10 miles.

Amazing things to me from the day of the ride:

- The guy in the 70-74 age group who beat me by 20 or 30 minutes.
- The people with the perseverance to keep riding long after 8 hours have passed.
- The guy (I don't know his name) with a carbon prosthetic leg who dropped me like a boat anchor.
- The very low number of 20-35 year olds who turned in fast times. If they weren't "elite", they were slow.
