Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Eh... that is one hell of a bruise. Also, I'm pretty sure I wish I hadn't seen this.

This is one of those times I wish for a different thread structure. Unsee unsee. Heal up, though - that looks nasty.

Looks rough.

I read your previous post. Shooting that grass (along with a lawnmower wheel) out in the road and not cleaning it up is pretty irresponsible. I'd be giving his homeowners insurance agent a call.

Good luck healing.

Oops, I just reread your post. It seems the grass was growing/speading into the road and not shot out into the road by a lawnmower. My bad. Wonder how the lawmower wheel got there?

Very bad break.....Heal fast....

I had a wipeout about two weeks ago and I had almost the exact bruise, but it extended even further down the side of my leg. I figured mine was so bad because I am on Plavix and baby aspirin. The good news is that it will go away, mine is almost gone but still hurts like a mofo

Here's how crash injury hierarchy goes, from low to high:
Bruises-road rash-broken bones.

It's a big bruise but I'd take it over the alternative.

Ice...Ice...Baby. Seriously though...Ice that ****, Atleast 20 minutes 2 or 3 times a day if you can. For a big meaty spot I would that you could even go with 30 minutes of ice. Ice bag, no towel or paper towels between the skin and ice. Let me reiterate that, DIRECT SKIN CONTACT WITH ICE Lots of people out there think it could cause frostbite that fast...Your going to get 4 major sensations with the ice, and they will go in this order, Cold -> Burning -> Aching -> Numb...You must let it reach the Numb stage...You are allowed to ice multiple times a day, but the area must return to normal body temperature before you can ice again.

Holy hell. It's like, you painted your leg with paint then decided to go crazy with a hammer and whack yourself! You could fit half of New Zealand on that bad boy.

Must hurt something special.

I had a bruise like that after my bike crash last year. Certain movements were excruciatingly painful-like tearing of flesh. Heal up soon.

Although I like seeing road rash and bruises, myself. (Sick and twisted).

But here's my opinion of the answer to that question.

Did you have an X-ray? Seriously if you are not were not taking aspirin, I would suggest you consider going and having an xray to be sure you didn't chip your hip bone or something like that, that's an awful lot of bruising for just a soft tissue trauma injury. And wow I had no idea icing was so scientific, I just put it on and leave it, the principle being the cold decreases the blood flow and therefore the swelling. What is the advantage to letting the tissue warm up then icing again?

This type of post is not intended to shock, but to warn of the dangers of road biking. In this case, a danger that was hidden and not even discovered until the damage was done. Be careful out there !!!! As soon as my rump can handle the saddle I'll be hitting the road again.......

Not waiting for the tissue to warm up again can cause necrosis of tissue (frost bite), and it can also cause nerve damage...

These are the scientific reasons or benefits of icing:
1. Vasoconstriction at cellular level
2. Decreased cell metabolism
3. Decreased capillary permeability
4. Decreased pain (nerve conduction) > Gate control – cold inhibits pain transmission
5. Inflammatory mediators & prostaglandin synthesis inhibited

Here are some future reasons for anybody here on when they should or shouldn't ice themselves...
Indications................................... ......Contraindications
Acute or Chronic Pain .................... ....... Decreased Cold sensitivity and or hypersensitivity
Acute or Chronic Muscle Spasm........ .......Cold Allergy/cold-induced urticaria
Acute inflammation or injury ............ ...... Circulatory or sensory impairment
Postsurgical pain and edema ................... Raynauld’s phenomenon
Neuralgia ............................................ Advanced diabetes
Superficial first-degree burns ..................Hypertension
----Used with exercises to:---- ............. Uncovered open wounds
-----Relieves pain ................................Cardiac or respiratory disorders
-----Decrease muscle spasticity............. Nerve Palsy
-----Facilitates mobilization ................... Arthritis
...........................................................Lupus

I'm not copy and pasting this stuff from wikipedia FYI, these are notes from my first semester as an Athleic Training student.
