What type of climb do you prefer

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Love your user name!

The ride I organized last weekend included these two climbs (and some other smaller climbs).

I prefer the first one to the second one.

WxGuesser has a good point. When I lived in Winnipeg, I'd drive 150 km to do hill repeats because there wasn't anything closer than that ... but if I had hills within 15 miles (25 km), I'd just use the 15 miles as a warm-up on my way to do hill repeats, and a cool-down on the way back.

Don't have long hills where I live. 1 mile at 15% is about the limit so I have to travel to get long climbs in.

Once you get into the rhythm they are just a slow ride.

I live in the FLATS. So, I prefer any climb that lasts more than 120 seconds or so and I know I'm not a strong climber.

Having said that, your post is talking about averaging 15mph during a 5 mile long climb. That is faster than many people on these forums ride the flats.

I just did a climb of 2100 feet over 17 km on dry, dusty forestry roads and cattle track on an MTB. It took two hours and 11 minutes of continuous climbing. The numbers aren't that impressive but at 50, living in flatter lands and temps of 100 degrees, I was happy to see the summit. The steepest climbs were 10% but felt like 20! The ride back down was worth the climb!

Just raced Burke Mountain yesterday...

I've driven up Equinox. My wife and I had our wedding reception up there. I don't know about riding up it, unless the road is closed to cars. From my remembrance of the ride up, it's steep and long and had some switchbacks that were super steep.

Raced Equinox August 1st...

It is the only time bikes are allowed on the road...

No descending, you must have a ride down...

It is steep and long...

I love riding my bike up hills....

I live in the Okanagan Valley of BC, I live in the mountains so there is lots of climbing outside my front door, however, they are relatively shorter, but very steep climbs.

I enjoy the climbs I can find if I just get on the car and drive over to Golden or Radium, BC or over the other side to Banff , or ......................

Yeah, I know they think we are nuts. Good.

We get it for sure. I think it's quite possible my wife has uttered the same phrase. We don't have a garage so at the moment we're talking about adding a second shed to the property for guess what?

Back to the topic with a little side question. How many of you have developed knee problems with this climbing like myself?

I have had my knee issues in the past but solved most of them...

I found I had my saddle too high...

It has been lowered about 2 cm over the last 3 years and I think I am now spot on...

Also correct gearing is key...

Most will try and be manly and mash up hills...

I ride with a 24 or 26 chainring and 11/32 or 11 34 cassette...

My cadence up the steepest hills remains 85 - 90...

sorry, your right, I'm not the most skill at even simple math... i average around 9-10mph on a climb of about 5%... so make that over 30 mins.
