LOL Yeah the first time I did Squaw it took me 2 hours to get to Echo Lake. Its a beautiful ride though some time I like to just sit back and enjoy the view.

Yeah I can see how hiking in SIDI's could be a tad slippery and uncomfortable.

I could ride with you, but not badhat. I am usually under 2.5 hours to Echo, but I take a break to get water in the campground.

I regret that I didn't hit the summit this year. I got turned back once for a road closure at the toll gate (the shoulder was collapsing) and the second time, there was too much snow above Summit Lake and they were plowing (in August). Last year, I made it up 3 times.

My friend and I rode together on her first ride up Mt Evans in the beginning of July. She hiked to the top in road shoes with exposed cleats. I came along but had cleat covers. If I had been paying attention I should have been the gentleman and handed her my cleat covers. I think we both use looks.
Anyhow, it is possible.

Yeah that is pretty bad arse I love the snow in the pic.... I think it is just such an epic ride.... How does it feel RACING up that last part above summit lake? Talk about pain....

How many people enter the race each year?

theres 1100 or so i think? not sure but in that ball park.

they start in heats though, citizens go first then the cats by cat and age and sex. the road is closed from echo lake to to the top so the only traffic is support vehicles, which is really nice.

in my case, i started off with what was basically the lead group of citizens (there were 2 or 3 people ahead of us, but we were the first group) of maybe 6 or 7 guys, and we paced from the springs to echo lake, and after echo lake it got pretty strung out, so until the pros caught us a couple of miles from the top, it was strung out enough that i could only distantly see the people in front or behind me. so it was kinda like having the whole mountain to myself.

until danielson and his support car flew past me like iwas going backwards, that is.

by the time i got to the switchbacks, the pros were passing me pretty regularly. i was probably among the 50 or so to get to the top, but really, any pro who came in within a half hour of me actually beat me, which was a lot of pros.

summit was gorgeous and sunny and entirely free of anyone who wasnt either on a bike or a support vehicle. great scene, lots of pics and good vibes and weezing and free cliff bars....

now i'm sure that the rest of the day was much more chaotic, with the citizens continuing to pour in all morning and the different heats going off every half hour, but being among the first up there was awesome.

one of my favorite bike moments.

Sweet pictures....ugly climb :( lol

badhat 09-08-09 11:59 AM

my time, which i think is perfectly respectable, was 1 minute slower than the last place in the mens open

dark13star 09-08-09 12:07 PM

respectable is an understatement. That is an awesome time.

Nice. I'd like to conquer this mountain someday.
