Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Some do. Some ride with only a radio. In pro mountain biking its a lot more common due to the abuse the gear gets but there are some road racers that just don't want to see the numbers but just see their bodies.

computers are important in a lot of people's eyes. I ride my road bike with a computer because I like to see my improvements in data. My mountain bike and town bike are both lacking computers so I don't always rush myself. It all depends on what you're doing, training or having fun. I would find it very hard to ride my road bike without my computer for the simple facts of knowing where I'm physically at. But I love not having one on my mountain bike.

The human brain is the most powerful computer known to man. Therefore I'm always with a computer riding or not.

I have one on my commuter, but not on my road bike. I rarely miss it. I wished for one momentarily on Monday when I was pulling the group and we were trying to keep the pace civilized and very steady, but the guy next to me had one.

I'm asking for a Garmin for Christmas (b/c I'm always getting lost), so I'm trying to hold off until then...

I train with a PT, use it for intervals mainly on the rollers. Any other time, nope. Group rides, races, most solo rides- either I'm there or I'm not. Don't need a computer to tell me that.

I always use my computer. I hardly pay any attention to it, except for when the ride is over I glance down to check out my total trip mileage.

I've been riding since the end of the season without any sort of electronics.

That, coupled with my extensive riding of the fixed gear, has been quite refreshing. The first times out it was a bit uncomfortable to ride without focusing on power numbers or gear shifting.

Now, it's just zen-like.

I started the year with a dead battery in my computer, and it was so liberating I left the battery dead all summer, only fixing it before my longest ride of the year. Now it's back on, but I'm not a slave to it. I just like to have my average speed and total distance numbers for ego-stroking purposes (though the numbers are very far from being impressive )

A couple of weeks ago, one of the old dudes in the group did our Sunday ride on his FG. 60 miles. He had no trouble keeping up. Then again, he's an animal.

This.

I've had this happen to me several times. Put my head down and hammer, look back a few minutes later and discover I've dropped the entire group. Feel like such a tool as I soft pedal until they catch up. Now I use my computer to make sure I'm not doing that.

Other rec rides, I have it but neglect to turn it on. Doesn't matter how fast I'm going or how far since I already know the route.

I actually lost my computer out on the road the other day. I had taken it off before I brought my bike to the LBS to get my bars re-wrapped, and I guess I was careless and I didn't click it back in all the way. It was a nice one, cateye wireless...just bought it too.

In a way though, its nice to not have one now. I was always looking down wondering how fast or how far I'd gone. Now, I just spin and ride at whatever speed feels right. It would have been nice to keep it for at least a few more days since I have a century ride on Sunday, but oh well.

That's the problem ..... You shouldn't need a computer. Just stay at the same pace you were before the guy pulled off.

I bought a computer within a few weeks of buying my bike three years ago. I never installed it, nevr used it, didn't wanna be a slave to it. I ride for fun. Everything else to me is irrelevant.

I always use a computer on my road bike. I like to check my distance and it also comes in handy for mantainance. Used to be more concerned with my average speed but with my schedule this summer I'm just glad to be able to go out for a ride.

No computer here, since the end of 2007. Don't miss it at all.

As was said above: zen like, keeping it basic.
