Race worthy aluminum frame that's not a CAAD9

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So what's with the OP's CAAD9 hate anyway? Just want to be different?

That's exactly the reason why so many people buy the CAAD9. I'd also guess that just about any of these aluminum frames with decent mid- or top-tier components would end up being in the 16-lb range.

Does Cannondale still offer the $350 crash replacement frameset now that the bikes are produced overseas?

Hard to recommend something that isn't available.

I test rode a CAAD9 and Felt F75 back to back, I liked the Felt much better. The CAAD9 felt a bit rougher of a ride to me while the Felt felt smoother. That's what my butt felt, your butt feel may vary.

When it comes to 'feel' its all about tires, my friend, and wheels.

The felt F75 has carbon rear stays. More compliant, yes. But less stiff and heavier.

Someone would be a fool to buy anything other than a Cannondale, a Gaulzetti, or Spooky.

Since it's my job, I'd say buy one of our bikes... If you want something even more bombproof than one of our Skeletors (about 90 got raced this year... No warranties), the Gaulzetti's are the way to go. For Sure...

If you want to be a Fred, get a CAAD9. Otherwise get a Cervelo S1.

So, Fred or Poseur. Tough choice.

Van Dessel Hellafaster comes to mind, everything about that frame feels aggresive ala CAAD 9, Voodoo bicycles makes a nice Scandium (aluminium alloy) frame that looks very nice though i haven't had a chance to ride that one only see it at my LBS

For less money than the previously suggested options consider a Ti frame ...

It will last a lifetime and does not have the durability drawbacks of Al or Carbon ...

2010 Motobecane Frameset Le Champion Team Titanium $899.70
3/2.5 Butted Titanium, High Modulus Carbon Fiber fork with Carbon Steerer tube

Anything dramatically wrong with the "normal" brands out there? Jamis, Masi, Giant, Trek, etc. Heck, Raleigh. Especially now - dealers were pretty aggressive with 2009 inventory because oil prices were going through the roof, and when they plummeted, so did bike sales. Based on what I read in Bike Retailer I think there's a huge amount of 09 and even 08 inventory around, and you can get some killer deals on that stuff.

I helped someone pick out a bike. Recreational road rider, curious about bike racing, $1000 budget. He got a Trek. Someone else wants a road bike, no racing, prefers orange, wants a bike that to her seems zingy, zesty. Her budget is $1200. I steered her towards a bike but unfortunately she didn't fit the one bike that would have been ideal (a blow out bike, decent components). She's still looking.

I've raced my Giant TCR (it's a couple generations old, maybe 2002?) aluminum. Okay, so it adds a bit of weight, but otherwise it's basically the same as the carbon. I'd rank my SystemSix above both, but I have a feeling a CAAD9 would not be too distant from the SystemSix.
