SRAM Road + Mountain Compatible?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

SRAM Road + Mountain Compatible?

Can I use SRAM Rival brifters with X.7 derailleurs and a wide (11-34) cassette? This is a 26" MTB to 29er cross bike conversion, and I'm wondering whether to mess with swapping the riser for drops.

I know they're both 1:1, but the shifters are also "zero loss", whatever that means.

Bonus points: any way to use the brake lever part of the Rival brifter with cantilever brakes?

Mods, move this if there's a better place for it...

No. Rival is 10 sp. That cassette is a 9-sp. Also, SRAM road and MTB shifters use different amounts of cable pull, even tho I believe their respective derailleurs both use a 1:1 cable pull to RD movement ratio.

True. And I know the cable pull wouldn't be right for, say, 9 speed ultegra or something like that.

I guess I could go to barends and road levers. Maybe I'll just leave the riser bar. I like it, and I'm new to cross racing so I'm going to suck all year anyway, drop bars or nay.

No. SRAM's 9-speed and under MTB stuff is 1:1. Their road shifters are NOT 1:1, though they are somewhat close, somewhere around 1.2 or 1.3:1, I think. You cannot mix SRAM road shifters with any of their 9-speed derailers. However, you CAN use their XX 10-speed MTB derailer, which also uses Exact Actuation (the SRAM name for their road cable-pull ratio). So you'll have to shell out a bit more dough than you would for X.7, but it can be done.
