Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

El Salvador is a cool place. Did you hook up with any local womenfolk at all? Make it complete.

sounds to me like it's even more important to wear your helmet when you're cycling in unknown territories.

But hey, I'm sure you know best. You are after all, the one who bailed twice in Ecuador.

It wasn't a choice out there, the bike shops just didn't have helmets, nobody wore them out there, when I got back it just became habit

Otherwise I appreciate your story and your new outlook on cycling but many of us are not naturally talented enough to just ride and become stronger. For many of us all the stats are the tools we have to get stronger within our time constraints and physical limitations. Getting stronger is what makes cycling fun for many of us, just sayin'.
I guess if you race I can understand, but if you're just trying to have fun like me, I've found that personally I enjoy it more without all the numbers

I said in the middle of nowhere, not unknown territories, Arizona doesn't have many middle of nowhere places to ride and I pretty much know them all

Fair enough, I see what you're saying. I actually have been racing w/o a computer and enjoy the racing experience better, just ask for the mileage from a teammate after the race to put in my log books.

This is the bike I rode when I was in Ecuador for the past few months, it was the only rode bike I could find and it happened to be called 'Phoenix', talk about destiny, it was a piece of **** and I loved it. I raced up and down the hills of the Amazon like a champ, IMO there is no better way to see a place than on a bike, people waved to me, kids ran beside me, cars honked, I moved through the jungle fast enough to not get bored but not too fast to not enjoy it, it was beautiful. Oh I also fell twice, here's a pic of the first one:

I got so excited going down a hill that I didn't notice the steep turn at the bottom of it, I ended up in the rocks, no helmet, lucky to get away with just a couple scrapes and bruises not to mention my life

Anyway it was an amazing place, first thing I said when I got there was I need to get a bike, 100 bucks put me on the road, probably payed too much considering where I was but it's a hell of a lot less than the several thousand I have spent on my road bike back at home, and you know what, I had just as much fun if not more so on 'El Phoenix'. It was nice to be able to ride without having to put on the gear, it was nice to not worry about scratching my precious frame or components, it was nice to not have a computer and be obsessed with numbers, it was nice to be riding such a piece of **** because it made it more challenging. Yeah the rainforest being all around me probably contributed too, but I think I developed an appreciation for simplicity out there largely because of my experience with the bike, and since I've gotten home riding my Felt just hasn't been the same. Where do I go from here? I dunno..I sold my Garmin and now ride without a computer, I also ride without a helmet, I don't give a **** about scratching my bike up anymore, and I'm not a weight weenie anymore either. I don't think I'll get rid of my baby, I developed a love for climbing out there and this bike is great for that. I guess what I've learned is that you don't need the fancy stuff for cycling to be awesome, matter fact I think it's more awesome without the fancy stuff, I think all of this obsession with weight and carbon fiber and stats is part of a bigger problem we have in our culture, what that is I can't say for sure, but I was caught up in it for awhile as people who know me here can attest to, and I just want to say it's pretty liberating to get out of all that, even if only momentarily.
Always wanted to ride in South America. Was stationed in Panama and Honduras when I was in the service and never got the chance. Its a beautiful place and sounds like your trip was great, congrats.

how much time did you spend pondering between 'don't' and 'can't' before you decided to just leave them both in?

reminds me of my trip to south america two summers ago, although i think the bikes in central america might be worse. i saw some roadies in chile and argentina, and met some guys who started the first bike messenger company in santiago de chile. they had decent steel fixed gears, but most of the new bikes i saw were like that phoenix, basically the worst of everything, all at once.

i was happy to read your renewed perspective on upgrades. i understand wanting the latest and greatest (ex: all of FW09 wings + horns, please and thank you), but it's nice to recognize that desire as a function of the consumption we've been socialized into craving.

it was tough choice. i can't make the tough calls. leave it as a multiple choice.
