Look keos versus shimano Dura ace pedals
Looking for those who have tried both and their impressions. Weight is not my #1 concern.

You mean the Shimano Dura Ace 'look-type' pedal, the SL system? I have good experiences with the Shimano Ultegra SPD-SL pedals. I imagine the Dura Ace ones are only better (but not cheap, I see they go for about $300).

I love my Keo Carbons (chro-mo axle), but that could have something to do with the $0 I paid.

If you're going to get SPD-SL's, either get 105 or dura ace. Ultegras are a complete waste of money. I switched from Look to the shimano system - not going back to look.

I had Look and now have last years Dura Ace pedals.
Both work fine the only benefit to Dura Ace is that they have pads on the cleats so that they are easier to walk on.

No experience with shimano pedals, but i am currently using Look Keo sprint pedals. I like the limited float compared to the speedplay x5's i switched from. The platform also feels more stable.

I recall reading that all of the new Keos now come with cleats with pads like Shimano. I read in the same review that the pads are softer than Shimano's which offers more grip but wears out quicker.

Good questions all. I'm currently using look keos and love them, but have had my eye on the dura ace for some time.
My look cleats DO have rubber to walk on, (built into cleat) but the first thing a pro did during my fitting was peal the rubber off. For $15 bucks you can by rubber covers to protect your cleats. If your gonna walk on them, this is MUST purchase item. I keep them in my jersey pocket and use them all the time.
I have no real reason to buy the Dura ace, but I'm itching for an upgrade and they really look to be top notch pedals...(they sure look pretty and would compliment my Ti frame nicely.)
Keos carbo is another pedal I've considered, but there have been many complaints about "squeeks:. I've also read horror stories where the pedal snapped. I like solid metal on my crank and pedals as well. THe Dura ace look solid.

I have been riding with Dura-Ace pedals for the last 5 years and I really like them. I migrated from the older Look delta pedals, and I like the Dura-Ace better. Stable, wide enough platform and the cleats are fairly easy to walk in.

if you are really itching to upgrade get a higher end set of Look pedals; you will not look back, however, the higher end pedals seem to only offer weight savings in my experience, as I have a carbon pair and the Sprint pair, one with steel the other with titanium spindles, and I really cannot tell the difference. The carbon ones seem to be more for weight weenies more than anything else.
That is why I bought the Carbon Keo's

stole your bike
A got a pair of those cleats when I bought another set of Keo pedals not too long ago and have been using them for a few months now with the pad still doing well. Granted I don't walk much when I commute but I was under the impression they would wear out relatively quickly; they're nice for commuting since I often have to unclip.

Keo sprints and carbon are discontinued for 2010, replaced by the Keo 2 Max which come in regular and carbon versions. The Keo classics are upgraded for 2010 and are very similar to the old sprints. The new Keo 2 max has many new features, including a metal wear area that will improve durability and also provides a larger platform as well as float with less friction. I don't know why a mechanic would remove the rubber on the cleats, perhaps he thought it might make it easier to clip in and out, the rubber does not touch any part of the pedal when you are clipped in. Keos are a bit lighter than the Shimano pedals, but both brands are very good. As for broken pedal spindles, Look had a few spindles break, something like 16 out of 80,000 pedals sold, and they addressed this by offering to upgrade the spindles free of charge for all customers who bought the affected pedals. All Keo pedals sold in the last 3 years have the upgraded spindles.

I recently switched from Look Keo Carbon pedals which worked fine and were plenty light. I switched to Dura-Ace 7810 SPD-SL because the pedal base and clip system is substantially wider and it has significantly improved the foot pain and numbness I was getting before....first from Speedplays...then better with the Keo's and now I think it might be gone altogether but more testing is needed. Plus, I think they look cool

I had the waste-of-money (WHY?!, to echo a few) Ultegra's. Older style. Got banged up and felt like a change, went for the Look KEO's. Liked the feeling, but I got immense pain in my knees, went back and got it swapped out for new-style waste-of-money Ultegra's.

I have the ironman HM Keos. I've loved them for the last four months at about 140 mi/wk. I just had a serious knee pain issue this weekend, but I think that was due to going too hard for 60 miles. It was crippling pain in different spots on each side. I went for a slow recovery ride the next day and everything felt pretty good, but I could still feel that it might come back when I tried to put down some power. We'll see how that works out. I'm fairly sure it's not the pedals as I use the gray cleats, and have been very happy with them since I first put them on. I've considered going to shimano, but one incident hasn't made me switch.

If you care about float get Looks. Shimano's pedals barely float but with looks you have several options with the grey or red cleat and the float is wider and smoother. I also think the front "hook" on Looks is easier to catch with your feet when clipping in. But Shimano's are better made and wider which I also like.

You can't get the "Keo Creak" in a Shimano pedal.
But Shimano offers cleats with zero float or 6* float. They're easily adjustable. They're incredibly durable and reliable.
